The California Gold Rush was over by the mid-1850s, yet “gold fever” raged on. Still hoping to strike it rich, disappointed miners began searching other parts of the West for treasure. If you were a disappointed miner who struck out, would you give up or still continue to search different areas for gold (Turn and talk)

In 1858 prospectors, who were people searching for valuable materials, found gold at Pikes Peak in the Colorado Rockies. According to newspaper reports, miners were making $20 a day panning for gold, this was considered a lot of money considering many workers earned less than one dollar a day. How did newspapers encourage people to go to Colorado to mine for gold?

People panned gold dust from streams or scratched gold particles from the ground. Most of the gold was in the form of ore found deep underground.
