1 Warm Up You will be given 5 minutes to read a passage titled, “Changing Foreign Policy” (Page 634) and answer the following comprehension questions: What did Washington advise Americans to do about foreign policy? 2. What is isolationism? 3. Define expansionism in your own words.

2 Reminders… Today is the start of a new unit. Do your best to pay attention and not fall behind early. Anyone who did not take the exam last class, or hand in your essays must do so.

5 Many more nations also expanded their trade in Asia and other parts of the world. The late 1800s and the early 1900s were called the age of imperialism. Can anyone infer what the word imperialism means? (Turn and talk)

6 Imperialism is the policy of extending a nations rule over other territories and countries. The search for materials and markets drove imperialism. The nations of Europe needed raw materials for making new products. They also needed new markets to sell the goods they made. This led to competition among European powers for influence in Asia and Africa.

7 How would you feel if people from other nations came to take away the resources of your country? (Turn and talk) This competition had effects that lasted throughout the twentieth century. For example, it helped lead to World War One, which we will discuss later.

8 Guided Practice As a class, we will popcorn read a passage titled, “Visions of American Empire/The Purchase of Alaska/Lifting Up the World” (636) and answer the following comprehension questions: How did some believe the United States would join the ranks of the world’s greatest powers? How did Seward move closer to making his vision a reality?

9 Independent Practice Independently read a passage titled, “American Interest in Latin America/A Stronger Navy” and answer the following comprehension questions: How was the thinking of Strong and Blaine alike? How was it different? Do people in the United States today share these or similar points of view? Explain. Does Captain Mahan’s comment about sea power hold true for the modern world?

10 Group Work You will receive an info graphic titled, “The Alaska Purchase” Group 1 Based on the map, do you think the purchase of Alaska removed Russia from possible influences in the United States? Group 2 Why do you think Russia would have been willing to sell Alaska to the United States? Group 3 The U.S. purchased Alaska for the low price of two cents an acre. Why do you think the land was so inexpensive?

11 Exit Ticket Summarize todays lesson in a 3-5 sentence paragraph.

12 Homework In a 5-7 sentence paragraph, explain what factors led to imperialism
