5. Many more nations also expanded their trade in Asia and other parts of the world. The late 1800s and the early 1900s were called the age of imperialism. Can anyone infer what the word imperialism means? (Turn and talk)

6. Imperialism is the policy of extending a nations rule over other territories and countries. The search for materials and markets drove imperialism. The nations of Europe needed raw materials for making new products. They also needed new markets to sell the goods they made. This led to competition among European powers for influence in Asia and Africa.

7. How would you feel if people from other nations came to take away the resources of your country? (Turn and talk) This competition had effects that lasted throughout the twentieth century. For example, it helped lead to World War One, which we will discuss later.

You will receive an info graphic titled, “The Alaska Purchase” Group 1 Based on the map, do you think the purchase of Alaska removed Russia from possible influences in the United States? Group 2 Why do you think Russia would have been willing to sell Alaska to the United States? Group 3 The U.S. purchased Alaska for the low price of two cents an acre. Why do you think the land was so inexpensive?
