7 GROUPS OF DOGS 1. SPORTING: bred to hunt and retrieve game birds and small animals. They trail the scent in the air ex: Pointers, Retrievers, Setters

2. HOUNDS: bred to hunt by traveling the scent that game birds and small animals leave on the ground ex: Beagles, Bloodhounds, Hounds

3. WORKING DOGS: bred for herding animals and for guard, guide, or police duty ex: Shepherds, Dane, Collie

4. TERRIERS: active small dogs bred to chase small animals from their dens ex: Bull terrier, Fox terrier

5. TOY DOGS: bred as pets and companions ex: Pekinese, Pugs, Spaniel

6.NONSPORTING: make up a miscellaneous group of dogs bred for purposes not included in the first 5 groups ex: Boston terriers, Bulldog, Poodle
