3 THE SPORTING GROUP This group of dogs was developed to assist the hunter in the pursuit of game. There are 24 breeds recognized in this group.

4 THE SPORTING GROUP The Pointer The Labrador Retriever
Receives its name from the stance taken in the presence of game Possesses an even temperament The Labrador Retriever Active water dog bred to assist the hunter in retrieving downed waterfowl One of the prime breeds for service as a guide dog for the blind or for search and rescue work

The English Setter Trained as a bird dog The Brittany Method of working game is more like a setter Excellent shooting dog The American Cocker Spaniel Smallest member of sporting dog group Proficient at hunting woodcock

6 THE HOUND GROUP This group of dogs is of two basic types: one type hunts by scent and the other by sight. The Greyhound & Afghan are two breeds of hound that hunt by sight: all others hunt by smell.

Originally used for hunting, would hunt in packs, pursuing game by sight and followed by huntsman on horseback Now, used more as a show dog b/c of long hair Basset Hound Excellent sense of smell makes a great trailing dog Heavier in bone than any other dog Beagle Noted as a rabbit hound & hunts in packs or singly

8 THE HOUND GROUP Black & Tan Coonhound Greyhound
Specifically developed for hunting raccoons Greyhound Used for hunting all types of game Greatest gift is its speed

9 THE WORKING DOG GROUP This group of dogs has been developed to labor or work for humans. They may serve as guard dogs, sled dogs, police dogs, rescue dogs, and messenger dogs.

11 THE HERDING DOG GROUP This group was developed to aid the livestock herder with various species of livestock.

Originally used as a sheep herding dog Now used more as a family pet German Shepherd Courageous, obedient, steady, and loyal Old English Sheepdog Steady, muscular dog that is outstanding at herding Shetland Sheepdog Descent from the Collies

13 THE TOY DOG GROUP Certain dogs are called toy dogs because of their size; some are as small as 1.5 pounds! These dogs are very alert and popular as house pets and companions.
