How Do Hurricanes Form? Fun Fact : Only tropical cyclones that form over the Atlantic Ocean or eastern Pacific Ocean are called hurricanes. Hurricanes form off of warm, moist air which is why they only form near the equator. The warm moist air moves upward from the ocean causing an area of low pressure below. As the warm moist air works its way up it begins to cool off forming clouds. As it collects energy and starts to move faster it begins to form an eye in the center. The eye is very calm contains low pressure which sucks air back in the eye. Hurricanes that form north of the equator rotate counter clock wise and hurricanes that from south of the equator rotate clockwise based on the earths axis. http://www.physicalgeography.net/fundamentals/images/hurricanepaths.jpg http://www.physicalgeography.net/fundamentals/images/hurricanepaths.jpg https://i.ytimg.com/vi/O2evDMwIoyw/maxresdefault.jpg

Galveston Texas Hurricane Category 4 6,000-8,000 Deaths September 8, 1900 Deadliest Hurricane To Date This hurricane caused a lot of deaths because of the unpredictable behavior. They didn't put into play the heat and energy going into the storm over the gulf. It gained a lot of power and raised unpredictable havoc. According to the U.S. Weather Bureau forecasting the Galveston Texas Hurricane was very unpredictable. They were convinced it would go north east but it once it hit the gulf to grew strength and headed towards the Texas gulf. http://celebrating200years.noaa.gov/magazine/galv_hurricane/welcome.html#pred The photo shows the direction the hurricane went and the red represents where it gained a lot of its energy and power. Hurricane Andrew Category 5 26 Direct Deaths/ 40 Indirect Deaths August 24, 1992 “Hurricane Andrew had humble beginnings, starting as a tropical wave off the west coast of Africa on Aug. 14, 1992.The hurricane made landfall near Homestead in the early morning hours of Aug. 24, 1992.Warnings of Hurricane Andrew’s arrival led to massive evacuations across Florida, Louisiana and Texas. In South Florida, 55,000 left the Florida Keys, 517,000 abandoned Miami-Dade County, 300,000 left Broward County, and 315,000 fled Palm Beach County. Hurricane Andrew’s winds were thought to be 145 miles per hour at its height, but the data was revisited in 2002 and determined to be 165 miles per hour. This bumped the hurricane’s previous ranking from a Category 4 to a Category 5.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/21/20-facts-hurricane-andrew-anniversary_n_1819405.html The storm hit shore August 24, 1992. The storm tide measured 4-6 feet at first but then soon rose to as height as 17 ft. nearly 8 inches of rain come down in Miami Dade Counties and almost a foot in Hammond Louisiana. Hurricane Andrew was very destructive. The most destructive of its time. Some comedy in a very hard time for the people who were affected by Hurricane Andrew. Hurricane Ivan 2004 $4.2 Billion Large/ Long Winded “Ivan's storm surge completely over-washed the island of Grand Cayman, where an estimated 95% of the buildings were damaged or destroyed. Surge heights of 10-15 feet occurred along the Gulf coast during Ivan's first U.S. landfall. Peak rainfall amounts in the Caribbean and United States were generally 10-15 inches. The death toll from Ivan stands at 92 - 39 in Grenada, 25 in the United States, 17 in Jamaica, 4 in Dominican Republic, 3 in Venezuela, 2 in the Cayman Islands, and 1 each in Tobago and Barbados. U.S. damage is estimated to be near $14.2 billion.” http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/outreach/history/ Hurricane Ivan began as a tropical storm that crossed over Africa. Ivan reached a category 5 on September 9th over the Caribbean where winds reached 160 miles per hour. The hurricane then moved towards the Caymans and destroyed the area with category 4 winds. Ivan hit Alabama with 120 mph winds and weakened as it went inland. It was know for being very large and long winded. It went a long distance and caused a lot of destruction. Hurricane Ivans path of destruction. It a great visual of all the distance it covered. Hurricane Ivan was powerful enough to move a truck and put it in swimming pool. Hurricane Katrina 2005 Most Anticipated Hurricane/Most Expensive $108 Billion Hurricane Katrina originated over the Bahamas. It was a very devastating hurricane that killed and estimated 1,200-1.800. It was also a very controversial topic. A lot of people felt it wasn’t handled right as far as the relief effort. May people suffered and didn’t received help soon enough. “Hurricane Katrina was anticipated. Everyone knew about it and that it was coming. Once Hurricane Katrina hit land it was a category 1. It was seen to just be another hurricane until it went back out and like the Galveston Texas Hurricane it picked up energy and water and became a category 5. It broke levies and took out Louisiana. New Orleans was under water literally. It was the most expensive hurricane ever“. http://fortune.com/2015/10/01/expensive-hurricanes-joaquin/ This is view from space and shows just how massive it was. Hurricane Sandy October 22, 2012- November 2, 2012 233 Deaths $75 Billion in Damages Hurricane Sandy started over the Caribbean Islands. It then began to travel the whole east coast and dissipated over Canada. It was a very destructive hurricane that killed many and left not only physical but mental damage as well. “Like a scar, Sandy serves as a reminder of the past and a lesson for the future. If we hope to avoid similar traumas, we have to apply what we’ve learned and move forward, with new hopes and vision for the future.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/four-years-after-the-storm-the-legacy-of-hurricane_us_5810ac19e4b0f14bd28bd182?utm_hp_ref=hurricane-sandy-2012 A very cool photo of just how powerful the waves were crashing into the statue of liberty.
