2 1. CATEGORY Hurricane Floyd started out as a category4, but decreased to a category2 Even though it was a category2 it was still devastating.

3 2. WIND SPEED The maximum wind speed was 155 mph and the minimum pressure was 921 mbar.

4 3. HURRICANE PATH Hurricane Floyd formed off the coast of Africa, hit the Bahamas and then travelled the East Coast of USA. It made landfall in Cape Fear, North Carolina.

5 4. FATALITIES There were 57 fatalities from the Hurricane, 35 in North Carolina alone. 2.6 million people were evacuated.

6 5. DAMAGE The hurricane caused $6.9 million in damages.

7 6. STORM SEASON Hurricane Floyd was a Middle (peak season) storm that occurred in September.

8 7. ORIGIN Hurricane Floyd form in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa.

9 8. RETIREMENT The name Floyd was retired from the Hurricane list in the spring of 2000 due to the devastation it caused.

11 10. NUMBER STORM Floyd was the 8 th storm formed in the Atlantic Basin in 1999 and the 4 th hurricane of that year.

12 11. RECORDED STORM SURGE There was a 15 foot storm surge that hit Oak Island. There was epic flooding.

13 12. EVACUATIONS Hurricane Floyd had voluntary/mandatory evacuations up and down the east coast.

14 13. TWO DISTINCT STAGES A tropical depression have minimum winds of 23 mph Tropical storms have minimum speeds of 39 mph Winds have to be at least 74 mph to be considered a hurricane

15 14. HURRICANES OVER TROPICAL WATERS The water temperature must be at least 79°F for a hurricane to form over tropical waters

16 15. HURRICANE FORCE Flash flooding is now the hurricane force that causes the most deaths during a storm. Historically it was storm surge.

17 16. LAND-FALLING HURRICANES Tornadoes are most likely to form on the right side of the central eye.

18 17. STRONGEST WINDS The eye wall is the name given to the part of the hurricane where the strongest winds are located.

19 18. POSSIBLE SAFEGUARDS Boarding and covering windows and doors Having flood insurance Having emergency supplies Evacuate before it is too late
