1 Hurricanes

2 A tropical storm that has winds of 119 km ph or higher
Typically about 600 km across In western Pacific are called typhoons Bring much needed rainfall to S. Asia

3 How do they form? Atlantic Ocean (Hurricane season) June – November
Begins over warm water as L pressure or tropical disturbance Becomes tropical storm and then hurricane Tropical storm mph winds Hurricane- 74 mph winds or higher

4 Where do they get energy?
Warm, humid air Rises, forms clouds, more air is drawn into the system Winds spiral inward toward low pressure High winds near center with heavy rain Lowest pressure and highest temps are at center Lower the pressure the faster the winds May be as strong as 320 km/hr

6 The Eye When the eye arrives, weather changes
Calm and sky may appear clear After it passes, winds blow in clockwise direction Center of the hurricane

7 Inside the eye of Hurricane Allen (1980)

8 How they move Usually a week or two
Atlantic Ocean = easterly trade winds After crosses land, loses energy because no warm moist air

9 Hurricane damage High waves, severe flooding and wind damage
Most dangerous features Storm surge Low pressure and high winds raise level of water up to 6 meters (15 feet0 Storm surge – a dome of water that sweeps across the coast

10

11 Naming hurricanes Each year, alphabetical list for hurricanes and tropical storms One name for each letter except Q,U,X,Y,Z

12 Saffir-Simpson Scale 1-5 rating based on intensity
Estimate of potential property damage and flooding expected Wind speed is determining factor
