Engaging URM Learners through Innovation: The IINspire LSAMP Undergraduate Research Certificate Program U Sunday Tim Associate Professor, Ag & Biosystems Engineering Dept. Faculty Leader, IINspire LSAMP Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011 tim@iastate.edu

Topics Brief Review of the UG Research Program Landscape @ Iowa State University University-wide Programs Colleges, Institutes, Center Programs IINspire LSAMP UG/CC Programs IINspire UG Research Certificate Program Objective, Goals, Requirements, Implementation, Lessons Learned

University-Wide Programs University Honors Program (First-year Honors) Students are matched with faculty mentors Students apply for $250 mini-grant to support research UG Research Assistantship Program Academically qualified junior and senior students are provided research experiences in forma settings; receive $3000 for 9-month academic period 40% of stipend are provided by faculty; remainder from Work Study (FAFSA) Must maintain GPA > 3.5; renewal at $3600 McNair Program Students are matched with faculty on research projects; goal is to prepare student for graduate school and doctoral program

College, Institute, Center Programs Ames Laboratory (Dept. of Energy) Science Undergraduate lab Internship (SULI) Similar to REU (16-week academic, 10-week summer; stipend and travel allowance; $500/week and $500) Community College Internship Same as SULI but limited to CC students and 10-week summer period College of Agriculture & Life Sciences George Washington Carver Internship (Rising freshmen/Undergraduates) 50-50 stipend matching between CALS and faculty mentors

Faculty, Labs, Others REUs More REUs Non-REUs Wind Energy Engineering & Policy Emerging Interface Technology (SPIRE-EIT) Microscale Sensing, Actuation and Imaging (Mosaic) CenUSA Bioenergy Internship Iowa EPSCOR Research Internship More REUs Biological materials and Processes Research Experience (BioMAP) Engineering Research Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC) Non-REUs Howard Hughes Medical Institute UG Research Program (CC students) Argonne National Lab UG Internship Program

IINspire LSAMP UG Research Program Undergraduates Students are placed with faculty mentors during the academic year and summer months (non-residential summer) Research Innovation in Science Enrichment – University Programs (RISEUP) CC students interested in summer research are paired with faculty at ISU; flexible, non-residential

Undergraduate Research Certificate Program Objective (Phase I, objective 5): Develop a research certificate supported by formal research training opportunities, internships, research experiences, and a high standard expected on verbal and written communication. Goals: Provide students with a planned sequence of courses and creative activities to support their systematic development as undergraduate researchers and prepare them for graduate school. Encourage and recognize students who devote portion of their undergraduate education to extracurricular research and creative activities. Make undergraduate research and creative performance a seamless part of the academic culture at the institution.

Requirements for Certification Four (4) terms of inquiry-based research in lab or field setting (summer is considered as 2 terms) 2 courses (or 6-credits) focused Quantitative Methods in Research (e.g., Calculus I; Intro to Statistics) 2 courses (6-credits) focused on Research Methods (e.g., Research Design and Methodology) 1 course (3-credits) in Scientific Writing and Communication (e.g., Technical Communication) 1 course (3-credits) focused on Science and Society (e.g., Philosophy of Science; Ethical Theory) 4 instances of written and oral presentation of research

Expected Competencies (Vision & Change Report) ability to apply the process of science (a) ability to use quantitative/mathematical reasoning (b) ability to use modeling and simulation (c) ability to tap into the interdisciplinary nature of science and creative process (d) ability to communicate (written/oral/visual; formal or informal) and collaborate with other disciplines (e) ability to understand the relationship between science and society (f)

participation (e.g., prize, letter of recognition, etc.) Implementation Step 1: Course or Research Experience Step 2: Research experience Step 3: Research Experience Step 4: Step 5: Apply for Certificate Reward student for participation (e.g., prize, letter of recognition, etc.) Outcomes: We have collected, and continue to collect, feedbacks from students on types of activities they have been involved with, including co-curricular activities, that can be applied towards the Certificate program

Thank You!
