Why look at VDI? Evolving end user needs have spurred increasingly complex IT management requirements in an already challenging business environment. Top of mind for businesses are: Reducing desktop costs and improving desktop management Migrating to Windows 7 Centralization of support and services Supporting diverse user scenarios such as: Mobile Users Temporary/Contract Users Call Center Users

What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) ? Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (or VDI) is an architectural model where a client OS runs in a server-based virtual machine environment and interacts with the user via a network connection. Its benefits are similar to those of session virtualization with RDS (fka TS). The storage and execution of a desktop workload (OS, apps, data) is centralized on a virtual machine in the datacenter Presentation of the UI is managed via a remote desktop protocol (such as RDP or ICA) to client devices Desktop Workload (OS, Apps, Data)

Desktop centralization choices Session Virtualization scales more users per server than VDI App-V works in both The same RDP connection protocol is used in both Much of the service infrastructure is shared Upsides for VDI: VDI offers better user operating system isolation VDI has better native application compatibility VDI allows users to be admins of their own images Upsides for Session Virtualization: Session Virtualization requires less hardware than VDI Sessions are cheaper than VDI desktops Server management is less than VDI Can also use App-V Remote Desktop Services enables both session virtualization and VDI!

App-V works with VDI and RDS Improves Application Compatibility prevents one app conflicting with another Prevents one app conflicting with other instances of itself Fixes many issues where app wouldn’t run as standard user Enables Consolidation of Session Hosts No longer any need for silos of session hosts Allows session hosts to be homogenous Improves user profiles Application settings can be stored to network location / roamed independently Increases usefulness of mandatory profiles

How to Get Started with VDI Pilot the Microsoft and Citrix VDI offering. Here are some instances in which our customers have deployed VDI: Windows-based desktops for contractors Windows-based desktops for task workers Windows-based desktops for non-mobile users in vertical industries where data security is important Windows-based desktops for remote offices with good connectivity VDI can significantly benefit your organization, but it is only one component of your desktop strategy. It is important to also consider building out a broader desktop management strategy. For this, Microsoft offers a wide range of desktop virtualization technologies that can be deployed concurrently to give customers the choice and flexibility they need to be successful.
