2 Microsoft Virtualisation Summit 2010
May 11 – 15, 2010 Planning to move to Windows 7 ? Migration isn’t the only consideration today How do I keep my data safe and applications secure? Should I embrace cloud services? How do I keep my mobile users productive? Should employees bring their own PCs for work? How do I manage costs? How do I take advantage of virtualisation? Should we go with Rich Clients or Thin Clients? © 2010 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 3 The Need for a Desktop Strategy The desktop is more than just an Operating System
Data & Settings Operating System Considerations How can users get to their environment from other PCs? How many images will you need to maintain? How will you handle migration? Data & User Settings Considerations How will you provide data security on all devices? How will users access data from different PCs? Is data searchable across PCs, local networks & the cloud? Primary Desktop Challenge: PC Components are bound together, making hardware & software difficult & expensive to replace Solution: Remove the hard wired dependencies and consider the layers independently Hardware Considerations Will consumer devices be allowed on your network? How will you support mobile devices? How will you manage the hardware lifecycle? Application Considerations How will you provide access from anywhere? Do you know how many applications you have? How will you manage the application lifecycle? Applications OS The Need for a Desktop Strategy Essential Points to Land: The desktop is more than the OS Essential to have a complete desktop strategy There are 4 essential components of the desktop: data, applications, OS, hardware: a complete desktop strategy should consider how these things work together Storyline: The desktop is more than just the operating system: The desktop includes the applications that make your business run, the data with which you make critical business decisions, the settings that help your employees personalize their PCs and make them more productive, and the hardware your users need to access the entire computing environment. When making client computing decisions, it is essential to have a complete desktop strategy that considers the whole desktop -- User Settings, Data, Applications, browser, and the operating system. Each one of these desktop components comes with its own set of challenges and considerations, which should be considered in combination with the others to achieve a strategically coherent whole. Transition: Regardless of your strategy, you should be able to support certain essential capabilities for your business. Hardware

Desktop Virtualisation for Rich Client Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Application Virtualisation Folder Redirection Roaming User Profiles MED-V Windows Server Hyper-V Microsoft VDI Suite Application Virtualisation Benefits Online and offline or slow connections Local processing power for rich applications Low TCO Leverages existing infrastructure investments Access from any network-connected device Access can be revoked at any time Desktops secured in the datacenter Best For Mobile workers Workers in remote offices High-End knowledge workers needing rich performance Workers moving between offices Task workers who do not require local processing power Always-connected workers Contractors/regulated workers for whom local data is prohibited

9 Desktop Optimisation How does Desktop Optimisation relate to what we do today Where do the technologies we will hear about in detail later fit

10 Traditional Desktop Design
Monolithic Advantages Quick installation times Minimal Infrastructure Fast skills acquisition Well known approach Dynamic Delivery User Applications Disadvantages High propensity for change High testing overhead Does not scale easily Inflexible Technology drove decisions Office Image Core Utilities O/S

11 Application Virtualisation
Applications Data & Settings App-V Client Applications OS OS Hardware

12 Modular Desktop Design
User Applications Office Core Utiils O/S Advantages: Reduced costs through automation and management Flexible Manageable Testing overhead reduced Focus on Business As Usual needs Single package Same model applies to both physical and virtual environments Dynamic Delivery Image
