Fast Food IS Bad For You! Gabrielle Houska

Story Board

Fast food facts There are more than 300,000 fast food restaurants in the U.S. alone In 1970, Americans spent about $6 billion on fast food. In 2006, the spending rose to nearly $142 billion. Today the average American child sees more than 10,000 food advertisements each year on television.

Fast Food Facts Continued Caffeine is the most commonly used drug in the world, and high doses can have serious health effects, including muscle weakness, heart irregularities, and infertility. Children and teenagers consume more than 64 gallons of soft drinks per year. Eating fast food can result in high levels of insulin, which has been linked to rising incidences of Type 2 Diabetes. In fact, more than 600,000 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed each year Burger King’s Double Whopper with cheese contains 923 calories. A man would need to walk for about nine miles to burn it off. Adding french fries and a large cola brings the total calories to an amazing 1,500 calories (2/3 of an adult man’s recommended daily caloric intake).

Facts Continued Each day, 1 in 4 Americans visits a fast food restaurant McDonald's feeds more than 46 million people a day - more than the entire population of Spain McDonald's distributes more toys per year than Toys-R-Us McDonald's operates more than 30,000 restaurants in more then 100 countries on 6 continents Before most children can speak they can recognize Mcdonalds 40 percent of American meals are eaten outside the home

Why is fast food so popular? -cheap -convenient -easy for on the go -always want to try the new advertised meal -can eat in the car -filling -kids and adult selections

How fast food is made? -Was previously made in the kitchen. Fries pealed or cut, burgers freshly cooked, etc. -Now it is made in bulk in a factory -Processed and manufactured -Poor oils and fatty products added -Prepackaged rather than fresh -All foods contain extracts for flavoring such as the nuggets, and fries

Who do advertisers aim their commercials at? Kids!  toys, "healthier" choices like adding apples to kids meals and making the fry sizes smaller.

3 of the most unhealthy french fries

Children Nearly one-third of US children ages 4-19 eat fast food every day. Results in children adding roughly 6 pounds per child, per year. Most fast-food advertising aimed at kids. It is chosen by parents for children because it is inexpensive and convenient

Obestiy 60 percent of all Americans are either overweight or obese The rise in the fast food industry has been linked to rising cases of obesity. The CDC estimates that 248,000 Americans die prematurely due to obesity and considers obesity as the number two cause of preventable death in the US Obesity has been linked to: Hypertension, Coronary Heart Disease, Adult Onset Diabetes, Stroke, Gall Bladder Disease, Osteoarthritis, Sleep Apnea, Respiratory Problems, Endometrial, Breast, Prostate and Colon Cancers, Dyslipidemia, steatohepatitis, insulin resistance, breathlessness, Asthma, Hyperuricaemia, reproductive hormone abnormalities, polycystic ovarian syndrome, impaired fertility and lower back pain obesity will surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in America The World Health Organization has declared obesity a global epidemic

Obesity Statistics More than one third of all adults in America are obese. Heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes are all obesity related diseases. 2008: Medical costs related to obesity appx. $147 billion. About 30% of Ohio is obese.
