Elevate Your Game: Help Your Campus Consider a Breakthrough Model Nancy Millichap, Program Officer Next Generation Learning Challenges, EDUCAUSE March 18, 2013

Plan for this session … Consider how proposing breakthrough ideas could help advance your career. Get a brief introduction to NGLC and a sense of what breakthrough models (nine “breakthrough ideas” in higher ed) look like. Select an area where you can imagine a breakthrough on your campus. Sketch out your initial ideas for a breakthrough you could initiate. Figure out who’d have to be involved to get it started. Discuss it with a partner. Decide on the next step to take.

Put that card on top of your stack. Your turn … pick an area from among these where you can imagine a specific breakthrough on your campus: Student support - ? Competency-based education - ? Technological innovation - ? Other area related to your expertise - ? Put that card on top of your stack.

Who would you need to convince to get an idea in this area going? A colleague in your own department? Your immediate supervisor? The head of your department/area? Someone in another area of the college? Write that person’s name or title on the “pitch target” card.

Seven Minute Individual Ideastorm Sketch out your idea Write or draw or diagram Use your laptop, phone, paper on tables, or large sheet of paper Go for the big idea, not the small details Consider the features that could sell your breakthrough idea to the person whose support you need

Five Minute Pitch Choose a partner. Your partner will role-play your pitch target – tell your partner whom they represent. Explain your idea to him/her in five minutes. Answer any questions you get. Pitch targets – ask questions if time allows. Switch roles.

The End and the Beginning Determine whether you should actually pitch your idea. What does your partner think? If you were to proceed, what would be the next step?
