Team Sports Atlanta Braves

Team History The Braves franchise started in Boston The Braves were named as such when they were still in Boston, in 1912. They were named after the Native American word meaning “Warrior.” Lasted 70 years Then moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Lasted 13 years Moved to Atlanta in 1966. April 12, 1966 the Braves played their first regular season game. Lost game in thirteen innings to the Pittsburg Pirates.

The Decade of Excellence October 1990 the Braves hired John Schuerholz as the general manager. After many losing seasons, the Braves finally stepped up and improved their game. Their 1991 season became known as the “Worst to First” season. The Atlanta Fulton county stadium became known as the chop shop because the fans of the Braves moved their arms in a tomahawk chop motion.

Ted Turner Born in Cincinnati, Ohio November 19, 1938 Attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island Bought the Braves in 1976 and was their manager for one day until major league baseball officials ordered him from the dugout. Ted Turner also bought the Hawks, Atlanta’s national basketball association Turners team finally reached the world series for the first time since 1958 in the 90’s. The Braves returned to the world several times in the 90’s

Fulton County Fulton County, created from DeKalb County in 1853, spread out in its strange, elongated shape by absorbing the destitute counties of Milton (to the north) and Campbell (to the south) during the Great Depression. It is named for Robert Fulton, inventor of the steam-driven boat. Atlanta, the county seat and state capital, flourished as the terminal point on an early railroad; fittingly, residents initially called the city Terminus. Later, residents changed the city's name to Marthasville as a compliment to Governor Wilson Lumpkin's daughter.

Turner Field Turner field is named after the Braves owner Ted Turner Built south of Fulton County April 4th 1997 the Braves played their first game in the new stadium The stadium was originally built for the Olympics in Atlanta. The stadium would first host the Olympics and then be converted into a baseball stadium
