About SIU Funding agency owned by the Ministry of Education and Research Established in 1991 Located in Bergen Around 100 employees Yearly budget of around NOK 350 million Some facts about SIU: Established in 1991 Public sector agency owned by the Ministry of Education and Research Located in Bergen Around 100 employees Yearly budget of around 300 million NOK, most of which are funds that we allocate to projects through the many different programmes that we are responsible for

What is InternAbroad? A pilot program: First call published this year Administered by SIU and supported by Innovation Norway Main objective: Increase the number of students from Norway who do a credit-yielding internship abroad What is InternAbroad? SIU’s main tasks include: Promoting international cooperation at all levels of education → we cover everything from kindergarten to university level We also provide information and advisory services to universities, schools, students and authorities (especially to our owner, the Ministry of Education and Research) SIU is also responsible for promoting Norway as an attractive study destination and as an attractive country to cooperate with on matters related to education And then programme administration is in a sense our primary task → SIU is Norway’s official agency for international programmes and measures related to education

Which costs can be covered? 2-year projects: Up to NOK 300 000 per project Funding can be used for salary (up to 50 %), travel costs, scholarships and other relevant costs Scholarships for foreign/international students to do an internship in Norway cannot be included, only scholarships for students from Norway

Example: What a budget could look like Cost Amount Explanation Travel costs 62 000 2 project meetings, travel costs for 2 persons Scholarships 120 000 8 students, 3 months each, 5 000 per month (8 x 15 000) Insurance 16 000 Insurance for 8 students (8 x 2 000) Salary and indirect costs 100 000 Payment to companies for hosting students (8 x 12 500) Other costs 2 000 Venue and meeting costs Total NOK 300 000

Who can apply? Norwegian universities apply to SIU Projects must have at least one company/organization (Norwegian or foreign) abroad as a partner Companies hosting interns must have an office/branch in Brazil, China, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, Canada or USA

Internship requirements May be undertaken in any form of business or organisation (incl. companies, schools, kindergartens, hospitals, etc.) May be full-time internships or combined with studies Students may be recruited from any discipline and any level (Bachelor, Master or PhD) Must yield a minimum of 7.5 ECTS credits Must last for a minimum of 2 months (1 month if combined with studies) Must take place in Brazil, China, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, Canada or USA

What is expected and required from companies At the application stage: A Letter of Commitment documenting interest in hosting students as interns (number of students, students from what fields, etc.) Division of tasks and responsibilities (supervision, insurance, accommodation, etc.) and funding should be discussed with university partners and described in the application Companies do not report to SIU

Application process Application deadline: 22 September 2017 at 15:00 Norwegian time Applications must be submitted through Espresso (SIU’s online application platform) Results will be announced in November 2017 Projects can start up in January 2018

Funding for projects in Brazil The Norwegian Government recently allocated NOK 2 million extra to projects in Brazil Very good opportunities for projects in Brazil to get funding Internships combined with studies are recommended in Brazil because of visa issues
