Evolution Happens Fast…Stay Ahead of the Curve The Story of “The Cloud” By: Rashida Jamil

What is the Cloud? It is the next stage to the Internet evolution. In layman’s terms: “It means the storing and accessing of data and programs over the internet instead of your computer’s hard drive” What does the “cloud” in cloud computing mean?

Key Essential Characteristics It is Virtual - Imagine a room full of Servers a.k.a. LAMP Stacks Flexible and Scalable - It’s easier! It’s open (or closed) It can be Affordable - Pay-as-you-go It is Secure - Private vs. Public

Cloud Computing Services Software as a Service (SaaS) Platform as a Service (PaaS) Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) Is a Cloud-based application that you can access from someone else’s computer/domain. For Example: Gmail Is a Cloud-based environment with everything required to support the complete lifecycle of building and delivering web-based or cloud applications A service that provides companies with computing resources including servers, networking, storage, and data center space on a pay-per-use basis.

Cloud Computing Deployment Models Public Cloud Private Cloud Hybrid Cloud Is owned and operated by companies that use them to offer rapid access to affordable computing resources to other organizations or individuals. Is owned and operated by a single company that controls the way virtualized resources and automated services are customized and used by various lines of businesses. Uses a private cloud foundation combined with the strategic use of public cloud services.

Gnarly Facts about the Cloud Cloud Computing allows companies to avoid upfront infrastructure cost. It allows enterprises to get their applications up and running faster. Google & Amazon--- found that using the Cloud, IT resources can eliminate complex dilemmas such space, time, power and cost. It was always there…just never noticed it i.e. Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo—Can access it anywhere. We use it too --- Salesforce, Bullhorn, etc.
