MALE & FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEMS UNIT 8 SEX EDUCATION MALE & FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEMS

MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM PARTS & FUNCTION Scrotum: loose sac of skin that hangs outside the body; function to hold testicles & regulate temperature Testicles: male sex glands; function to produce testosterone(male sex hormone) and sperm(male reproductive cells) Epididymis: highly coiled structure in testis; function to house sperm until they mature

MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM CONT. PARTS & FUNCTION CONT. Penis: tubelike organ; function is sexual reproduction/arousal & elimination of waste Sperm: male reproductive cells Semen: mixture of sperm & glandular secretions Urethra: duct that extends from bladder, through the prostate, to tip of penis; function is carry urine and semen out of body Vas deferens: long tube that connects epididymis with urethra; function is main carrier of sperm

MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM CONT. REPRODUCTIVE GLANDS: Seminal vesicles: sac on each side of prostate gland; function to contribute secretions to sperm to make them mobile & nourish them Prostate gland: lies below bladder, surrounds urethra; function secretes milky, alkaline fluid that mixes with sperm to help neutralize acid in urethra & vagina Cowper’s glands: pea-sized glands below prostate; function to secrete clear mucus into urethra to protect sperm

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM PARTS & FUNCTION: Vulva: external female reproductive organs Consists of: Mons pubis: rounded mound of fatty tissue directly over pubic bone Labia majora: fatty outer folds on either side of vaginal opening Labia minora: two smaller folds inside the labia majora

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM PARTS & FUNCTION: Labia: function to provide moisture, lubrication, and protection against pathogens entering the body, also function in sexual arousal Hymen: thin membrane that may partially block the vaginal opening Urethra: located above vaginal opening; function to release urine

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM PARTS & FUNCTION: Clitoris: small knob of tissue where the labia minora meet; functions to play a major role in sexual arousal as it contains many nerve endings & blood vessels, highly sensitive; sometimes referred to as the female counterpart to the male penis Vagina: elastic, muscle-lined tube; functions as birthing canal, tube for menstrual flow to exit, canal for semen deposit from penis during intercourse

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM PARTS & FUNCTION: Cervix: neck of uterus; function to dilate during childbirth to allow passage of baby, house glands that lubricate the vagina Uterus: hollow, muscular organ; function to hold & nourish fertilized ovum during pregnancy Fallopian tubes: tubes that connect uterus to ovaries; function where fertilization of ovum occurs

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM PARTS & FUNCTION: Ovaries: female sex glands; function to produce mature ova & female hormones Ovum: female reproductive cells (egg) Ovulation: process of releasing a mature ovum each month into fallopian tube Menstruation: shedding of the uterine lining
