About me: Kino Junior High, Edison Elementary 9th year teaching, 6th with Mesa Public Schools Graduate of Mountain View HS, Arizona State University Other activities include: Mountain View HS Marching Band – woodwind instructor (year 4) Arizona Wind Symphony – bass/contrabass clarinet (year 5) Academy Drum and Bugle Corps – tour administrator (year 7) Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association – Member of the Board of Directors and other random things Arizona State University – teacher training

Concert Band at Kino Junior High …by the numbers MU 19/20 Hybrid class – 7th and 8th graders Find the curriculum at http://www.mpsaz.org/arts/music/band-program- and-curriculum 37 students – 1st period 8 performances per year outside of school hours (dates in handbook) 3 flutes, 10 clarinets, 3 saxophones, 5 trumpets, 6 horns, 3 trombones, 2 euphoniums, 2 tubas, 3 percussionists

Skills and Grading 1st quarter: “individual skills” scales, tone, rhythm, unification of counting styles “How are we supposed to sound in junior high?” 2nd quarter: “whole ensemble” balance, blend, intonation, more scales, literature, cross-curricular connections (music history, acoustics, cultural relevance) Grading: Daily participation and in-class assignments – 40% Playing assessments/evaluations – 25% Concerts – 35% Make-up work and re-testing are an essential part of a “growth mindset” and constant improvement.
