Existing Prototype Test Facility (PTF) and planned Series Test Facility (STF) @GSI Schroeder, Claus Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012

Existing Prototype Test Facility (PTF) Overview Operation Schemas Outline Existing Prototype Test Facility (PTF) Overview Operation Schemas Planned Series Test Facility (STF) Boundary conditions Planned job-site New technical building Planned cryogenic infrastructure Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012

PTF Overview 2001: Planning started 2004: Installation complete and cryoplant running 2005: Feedboxes and universal cryostat installed 2006: complete cryo infrastructure in operation, beginning of normal operation (means magnet and component testing) 2006: Busbar and heat exchanger Tests, first model magnet (SIS200 overcritical operation with 60g/s) 2007: Anticryostat, first SIS100 model 2008-2011 SIS100 tests (including vacuum camber tests with and without magnet) 2010: Upgrade of the PTF (Shields for the Feedboxes; Cool down return line for independent operation,…) 2012: Upgrade for the SIS100 one layer pre series magnet (new current leads, 20 kA power supply,…) Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012

PTF Operation Cryogenic infrastructure at PTF: 36.000 h operation of the PTF 2.200 h with 60 g/s 73.500 h total operation of the cryo plant only 300 m³ Helium inventory 40-80% Helium losses/year Test bench area, SIS100 prototype, and universal cryostat Preparation area, Cryogenic infrastructure is located in the middle of the hall Distribution box (blue) Feed boxes and universal cryostat Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012

PTF Schema power supply feedbox 1 magnet in own cryostat cryo plant up to 11kA up to 14kA/s up to 22kA up to 28kA/s new cool down return lines feedbox 1 magnet in own cryostat cryo plant distribution box feedbox 2 universal- cryostat & cold mass Distribution and processing of the helium; Bath cooling 2 phase cooling 5g/s Supercritical 150g/s Temperatures down to 3.8K Pressures between 1.2 and 5 bar TCF 50, loan by CERN; 350W@4K Feeds helium and current to the magnet; measurement of: Mass flows Temperatures Pressures for cryogenic heat loss measurement Enables measurements directly on the magnet; Field measurements within the anti-cryostat Additional sensors Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012

PTF-Distribution- and Feedbox-schema Barber nickelson pump: 50-200g/s Ejector: temperatures down to 3.8K LHe-reservoir Inlet heat exchanger for temperature regulation TCF50-cold box delivers only 4 K forward and 4 K return Feed box schema (2003) skeletonized Feed boxes SIS100 operation SIS300 operation Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012

PTF two phase flow cooling (SIS100) Measurement operation: variation of mass flow in order to find X=1 at coil outlet. Assumption: all pressure drop takes place only in the coil. New HTS current leads for SIS100 Adapter box For SIS100 connection Study of a 14 kA-HTS current lead for SIS100 In order to operate the new single layer pre series dipole at the PTF we placed a call for tender for 2 pairs of new HTS current leads. These current leads are designed for the SIS100 bus bars so we get rid of the present used adaptor, which adapts the Rutherford bus bars to the SIS100 ones. SIS100 cable design Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012

Planned Series Test Facility (STF) for testing the SIS100 Dipole series and to enable a string installation... ...at a given location at GSI ...taking into account later use of the cryo infrastructure for the planned sc-cw-linac at the same place Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012

Overview of GSI, with the location of the existing PTF and the Planned job-site Overview of GSI, with the location of the existing PTF and the planned STF. Given area for the STF is stripper hall 2/3 which will be cleaned up within this year. existing PTF with annex, housing compressor and transformers new annex building, housing compressor, cold box, distribution box and electrical infrastructure planned STF in existing hall GSI campus Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012

Stripper Hall Given area is about 750 m² in order to have as much testing area as possible all technical infrastructure (including cryogenics) will be placed in a separate technical extension. So only the Feedboxes and transfer lines will be in the hall. There will be enough space to install at least 4 test benches It´s also possible to install a string, while suspending one test bench For later install of sl-cw-linac, two test benches have to be removed, but two benches will be still available First sketch to estimate the space (spring 2010) Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012

STF annex building 1. level For most of the technical infrastructure an annex building is in the planning phase: 15,6 x 19,8 m 9,30 m height 2 levels needed cooling water capacity about 1,1 MW compressor ORS/GMP cold box switchgear transformers distribution box main low voltage feed-in power supplies 3-D sketch of the annex for the stripper hall 2. level Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012

Size of the cryoplant 2009 we made a request of quotation for a cryo plat of 900 W @ 4,5K based on a planning of 1-2 test benches and a string (later sc-cw-linac [400 @ 4,5 K]) Required cooling power for 3-4 test benches: 1.200 W @ 4,5 K MAC advise 2011: 1.500 W @ 4.5 K Cryo plants above 900 W are not "standardized" Typical layout for the 900 W cryo plant by LIND (2009) Cryo-Review Darmstadt 27.-28.02.2012
