Christian Teachings on life after death

Learning Objective (1/2): Success Criteria (1/2): To understand that there are different Christian teachings about life after death. Success Criteria (1/2): ALL of you will be able to explain basic Christian beliefs about life after death. (F+) ALL of you will be able to give basic definitions of ‘heaven’, ‘hell’ and ‘purgatory’. (E+) MOST of you will be able to give more detailed explanations including the key terminology ‘immortality of the soul’ and ‘bodily resurrection’. (C+) SOME of you will be able to discuss differences in Christian teaching on life after death in detail using appropriate key terminology and be able to give opinions on them. (B+)

Christians believe there is an afterlife. Although the body dies and is buried or cremated, they believe that their unique soul lives on and is raised to new life by God. Their belief that Jesus rose from the dead three days after his crucifixion gives Christians hope that if they follow Jesus’ teaching and accept him as their Lord and Saviour, then this new resurrection life awaits them. By being born as a human being (the incarnation), and then dying on the cross, Jesus made this new ‘life after death’ possible for all. Jesus said, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.’ John 11:25-26 God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Main Activity You are going to work in small groups to research ONE Christian idea about life after death. Your group needs to come up with between 5 & 10 KEY FACTS. Keep them clear and concise as you are going to share them with the rest of the class.
