CONSIDER THE RECOMMENDATIONS WITH THIS IN MIND: What are the intended and unintended consequences of the proposed changes? What steps need to be taken, if any, to effect a system- wide change in priorities? How do we balance the often-competing goals of access and success? What existing positions (or proposed for F11) apply? If we don’t support the proposed recommendation, what are alternatives? 1. Review and Discuss Recommendations If you are a PPT user, you might want to put each recommendation on a slide with a few bullet points - depending on how much you need to cover. As I keep on saying, I see something new every time I look at the recommendations - quite troubling. Allow your attendees to discuss and ask questions - and use that resource person. 2. Review existing and proposed resolutions. How best to do this depends on how many of each sort that you have. This is a chance to have them discuss the pros and cons - to really explore. 3. What goal are these recommendations trying to achieve? How do we get there? If what is proposed does not do it - what would YOU suggest? (you being your audience..)

Senate Bill 1143, Liu Requires the Board of Governors (BoG) to: Adopt a plan for promoting and improving student success… Establish a Student Success Task Force…

Task Force on Student Success: Outcomes (1) Multiple measures and effective programs for assessing student success and completion… (2) Statutory and regulatory barriers to student success and completion. (3) Best practices for promoting student success and completion, including, but not limited to, the acquisition of basic skills. (4) Alternative funding options for providing necessary services to students and promoting best practices for student success and completion.

Task Force on Student Success: Outcomes (5) Alternative funding options instituted in other states for improving student success and completion. (6) The effective use of technology by community colleges and districts to promote, evaluate, and improve student success and completion.

Task Force on Student Success: Timeline November 9, 2011 - Distill input from public comments into final report December 7, 2011 - Review draft of report for transmittal to the Board of Governors January 9-10, 2012 – Board of Governors March 1, 2012 – “specified legislative committees”

2. Strengthen Support for Entering Students 2.2. Require students to participate in diagnostic assessment, orientation and the development of an educational plan. 2.3 Develop and use technology applications to better guide students in educational process. 2.4 Require students showing a lack of college readiness to participate in support resources. 2.5 Require students to declare a program of study early in their academic careers.

3. Incentivize Successful Student Behaviors 3.2. Require students receiving BoG fee waivers to meet various conditions and requirements. 3.3. Provide students the opportunity to consider attending full time

8. Align Resources with Student Success Recommendations 8.1. Consolidate select categorical programs.
