Theme is … Always stated in a sentence or thematic statement. A broad idea (motif) that comes from specific events and outcomes in a passage. A lesson learned based on what you get from the reading.

Theme is NOT … a “catch all” idea without any connection to the story. a plot summary or book report one word

To prove a point … Motif: Love Cinderella Events? Outcome? Romeo & Juliet

Where/ How often do they occur? Begin: Look for ideas/motifs that recur. Download the universal motifs document from my website if you want a quick list. Key idea When/ Where/ How often do they occur? Motif

Organize: Locate the specific events and outcomes in the text that are related to the motif. Ask yourself: How does the author develop the motif with events and outcomes? Are there specific literary devices, symbols, or characters connected to the motif? What proof do I have of these examples? (include page numbers)

Dig Deeper: Examine the effects or impact of the motif, events, and outcomes on the text. How do the events and outcomes affect the plot and/or characters? What evidence do I have to support this? (include page numbers) What is the lesson learned from this? Write it as one complete sentence (next slide)
