Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs History 2012: White House “Big Data R&D Initiative”  $200 million from 6 federal agencies 2014: NSF Big Data Hub Call for Proposals 2015: NSF  $6 million to four Hubs 2016: NSF  $10 million for “Spokes” proposals White House Federal Big Data Strategic Plan In late 2014, the NSF launched the new Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs program. This initiative is part of the National Big Data R&D Initiative that was announced by President Obama in March 2012 with >$200 million in funding from six federal departments and agencies, including the NSF. 2015: NSF  $6 million to four Hubs and set to award another $10 million to the Spokes, this year.

The NSF Big Data Portfolio RESEARCH Critical Techniques & Technologies for … Big Data (BIGDATA) INFRASTRUCTURE Data Infrastructure Building Blocks (DIBBS) EDUCATION National Research Traineeship (NRT) PARTNERSHIPS Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs (Big Data Hubs & Spokes)

South Big Data Hub WEST SOUTH MIDWEST NORTHEAST The South Hub serves 16 states – from Texas to Delaware—and the District of Columbia, with more than 500 members from universities, corporations, foundations, and cities committing their support. The South Big Data Hub is managed through an EQUAL partnership between co-executive directors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Activities of the Hubs are funded by the National Science Foundation and by our host universities, the Computing Community Consortium, and other partners.

South Big Data Hub Goals To stimulate an agile and sustainable national Big Data (and Big Geo Data!) innovation ecosystem; and To accelerate partnerships among people in business, academia, and government who apply data science and analytics to advance science, address societal challenges, and spur economic development in the region. The overall vision for the Big Data Hubs program is “to create an agile and sustainable national Big Data innovation ecosystem that enables the United States to better leverage Big Data technologies and techniques in addressing societal challenges; increasing productivity and spurring economic development; enhancing scientific discovery; and providing for national defense and security”. The specific goal is to stimulate regional partnerships involving public and private organizations of all types (academia, private industry, non-profit businesses and foundations, government agencies) in order to establish a national Big Data innovation ecosystem.

Four Key Roles ACCELERATE public-private partnerships that bridge industry, academia, nonprofits, and government. GROW communities of practice that connect data scientists with domain scientists, industry, and practitioners to share best practices, lessons learned, and success stories.

Four Key Roles ENABLE data sharing and shared cyberinfrastructure collaborations, resources, and services. BUILD data science capacity through education and workforce development.

Collaborations & Parnterships 250 Participants 68 Spoke Proposals Generated Hub meeting in Atlanta at Georgia Tech 70 proposals more than any other Hub – and for dynamically formed ( partners made at the meeting)

R&D Communities Data Sharing & Infrastructure Metro Data Science Healthcare 70 proposals– and for dynamically formed ( partners made at the meeting) Privacy & Security Industrial Big Data & Energy Materials & Manufacturing Natural Resources & Hazards

CyberInfrastructure WG Mapping existing collaborations, services, and resources, and identifying Hub member needs. Facilitating federated data sharing, computing, and analysis across institutions and partners (with NSF DataNet Federation, National Data Service, iRODS consortia, XSEDE, etc). $3M in Microsoft Azure cloud computing credits! Asset mapping of existing collaborations, services, resources, and data that could potentially serve the Hub. Customer Needs Assessment Building partnerships with cloud service providers and NSF-funded cyberinfrastructure programs to facilitate distributed data sharing, computing, and analysis across institutions and partners, while protecting privacy and ensuring security. $3M in Microsoft Azure credits!

iRODS as a Policy-Managed Environment The iRODS data grid is a generic data management infrastructure that can be tuned to support data preservation, data publication, data sharing, or data analysis through specification of appropriate data management policies. Education and Workforce WG Connecting early career faculty with industry partners through the Program to Empower Partnerships with Industry (PEPI) summer exchange. Linking talented students with tech startups in the region through the Southern Startup Internship Program in Data Science (DataStart). With support from the Computing Community Consortium, the South Hub: Connects early career faculty with industry partners through the Program to Empower Partnerships with Industry (PEPI) summer exchange, leading to research collaborations and creating a diverse data science pipeline. Links talented students with tech startups in the region through the Southern Startup Internship Program in Data Science (DataStart). UNC Analytics for Health Policy Workshop (April 2016)
