STRATEGIES FOR SUPPORTING STUDENT SUCCESS IN STUDENT TEACHING STUDENT TEACHING ORIENTATION University Supervisor & Cooperating Teacher Session STRATEGIES FOR SUPPORTING STUDENT SUCCESS IN STUDENT TEACHING (for supervisors & teachers)

Evaluation & scaffolding for success Observation evaluation goals: Provide timely verbal & written feedback Offer support, guidance, & mentoring Submitted to Tk20 so that candidates & cooperating teachers can review feedback (generally within 5 days of the visit) Monthly report generated by Office of Educational Services (to programs) noting: Submitted feedback Unacceptable scores (necessary per our CAEP accreditation Scaffolding for success goals: Provide support for candidates not progresses as expected Provide support for cooperating teachers & supervisors working with candidates not progressing

Establishing expectations Mentoring & coaching TASK Establishing expectations Mentoring & coaching Observation & evaluation Addressing concerns Candidates have the best opportunity for success when clear expectations are outlined at the start of their placement. The following are common expectation topics that help students understand their role & responsibility: communication responsibilities progress expectations observation schedule lesson plan, reflection and Impact on K12 Learning submissions * Review expectation for reviewing observation evaluations in Tk20 Mentoring and coaching candidates is an essential role for supervisors and teachers. Candidates expect the following: positive feedback & examples regarding areas where they are performing satisfactorily or better constructive feedback & examples regarding areas where improvement is required and suggestions regarding how to improve made aware of concerns and/or areas you are watching early in the placement which may lead to unsatisfactory rating or unsuccessful attempt at student teaching Candidates expect to receive written feedback regarding their progress, successes, and areas for improvement. The University is responsible for demonstrating that: Candidates are receiving timely feedback regarding their clinical performance Written feedback is available to the candidate and cooperating teacher within a few days of the observation visit Areas of concern have been documented and addressed with a attention to improve performance Candidates should be demonstrating growth in addressed areas during their placement. In instances in which the candidate is not progressing satisfactory the university supervisor is responsible for implementing the scaffolding for success plan. The following documents have been provided to assist you with addressing concerns: Scaffolding for success plan Clinical placement review team process Department/program expectations (as appropriate)   Cooperating teacher strategies meet with your candidate prior to the start or in the first few days of placement to review your expectations regarding: communication expectations lesson plan submissions meet or communicate with supervisor regarding schedule for progress contact information & communication plan Log into Tk20 confirming that all of your student’s mid-session (if required) and final evaluation is listed ** Submit any required items for payment of your stipend *** Within the first 2 weeks of placement address any areas which require significant improvement. Provide specific examples, ways to improve, and identification of any areas which may result in an unsatisfactory rating or unsuccessful attempt at student teaching Within the first 2 weeks of placement communicate to the supervisor any areas of concern regarding the candidate Review all supervisor submitted observation evaluations in Tk20 When possible, meet or communicate with the supervisor after each observation visit to review progress and areas for development. Review the submitted observation evaluation after each visit Review the final evaluation with the candidate and university supervisor prior to submission to Tk20. Submit the final evaluation within 5 days of the final date of student teaching to provide supervisors an opportunity to review and consider for final grade submission Candidates have been prepared to receive regular constructive and positive feedback regarding their performance. Cooperating teachers are expected to provide this feedback on a daily and weekly basis. Cooperating teachers are asked to address any concerns regarding the candidate performance with the university supervisor at the earliest possible opportunity Cooperating teachers may also reach out to the Office of Educational Services for additional support or assistance with addressing a candidate concern

University supervisor strategies TASK University supervisor strategies meet or communicate with cooperating teacher and candidate regarding schedule for progress observation schedule contact information & communication plan log into Tk20 confirming that all of your students’ observations are listed correctly. ** Within the first 2 weeks of placement address any areas which require significant improvement. Provide specific examples, ways to improve, and identification of any areas which may result in an unsatisfactory rating or unsuccessful attempt at student teaching. Within the first 2 weeks of placement communication with the cooperating teacher any concerns regarding the candidate. Submit all observation evaluations in Tk20 within 7 days of the visit.**** Meet with or follow up with the candidate and cooperating teacher after each visit to provide verbal feedback regarding areas for growth and improvement. Submit an observation evaluation within 7 days of each observation visit to Tk20. This will allow the candidate and cooperating teacher to review and plan for areas of development. Submit a final observation evaluation prior to the due date for grades as established by the University. Send a note to the cooperating teacher and student that the final observation evaluation is available. Complete the Professional Dispositions Assessment in Tk20 when submitting the final observation evaluation. supervisors are responsible for implementing the Scaffolding for Success Plan (*) and notifying the following individuals: Department chair Program coordinator Office of Educational Services Supervisors are responsible for communicating at the mid-point of each session (*****) if a candidate is not progressing as expected. Written communication (email) should be sent to the department/program chair AND director of educational services UNIVERSITY SUPERVISORS *please note expectations for your program regarding submission of lesson plans, Impact on K12 learning **Tk20 accounts will be updated within 2 weeks after the start of the student teaching session. log in concerns and corrections to student information can be sent to scsutk20support@southernct.edu ****supervisors are responsible for submitting observation evaluations after each visit to provide timely feedback to the candidate. Candidates AND cooperating teachers should review submitted observation evaluations in Tk20. *****Supervisors will be asked to submit the names of candidates in which they have implemented the Scaffolding for Success Process during the 4th week of placement as follows:   COOPERATING TEACHERS **log in concerns and corrections to student information can be sent to scsutk20support@southernct.edu *** returning SCSU cooperating teachers (within the past 5 years) do NOT need to complete a new W9 form and (within the past 2 years) do NOT need to complete a new online stipend request form.
