Forest Edge Elementary Welcome Parents! Forest Edge Elementary Dr. Y. Calhoun Fifth Grade Class

Welcome to Fifth Grade! I will introduce you to fifth grade and to our classroom. If you have any questions during my presentation, please hold them until the end.

My Goals To give my students the academic and social skills needed to progress to the sixth grade. To provide them with a supportive and fun classroom environment. To help them make new friends and discover new interests.

Fifth Grade Curriculum The subjects that are covered in fifth grade are: Reading, Writing, and Language Arts Mathematics Science Social studies A host of additional options

Home Learning and Weekly Assessments Home learning includes a Reading Log. Your child is required to read for a min. of 30 minutes per day. The children are to fill out the reading log on inside their journals as it will be counted for a grade. Homework is copied in the agenda on a daily basis and that homework is due the next day. Please initial their assignments. Word Study: Test are given on a bi-weekly basis. Weekly packets with many different practice options are sent home at the beginning of each week and is due on Friday. Students will be assessed on a weekly basis on material covered during the week or the prior week.

Student Expectations Students should behave appropriately and follow classroom rules established as a class. Homework Homework is assigned on Monday and should be completed and turned in Friday morning. We will go over homework together on Monday Copies of the homework can be found on Blackboard Class work should be completed in a timely manner

Parent Expectations Homework procedures Conference requirements Check your child’s backpack for their Homework Folder. Conference requirements Conferences will be held on November 7th Attendance Students should arrive on time and attend school everyday unless they have a scheduled Doctor appointment. Please notify the school if your child will be late or absent from school

Teacher Expectations Individualized instruction I will teach your child to the best of my ability and accommodate to all of their learning needs Individualized instruction Will be given according to your child’s needs Interims and Report Cards Interims come home 4 ½ weeks into each quarter Report Cards come home every 9 weeks at the end Of each quarter Both come home in Friday folders

FCPS 24-7 Learning Students can find assignments, practice sites, classroom news, schedules, etc. on FCPS 24-7 Learning specifically in 2016-2017 Dr. Calhoun’s Fabulous Fifth Grade Class Each student will have their own username and password to access the site from school and home. (separate paper with further details)

Google Classroom Google Classroom will be used this year Weekend Writing assignments Daily check-ins/exit tickets, projects, and other assignments will be completed on google classroom as well as google apps Feel free to have your child log on and show you what google classroom is all about

Rewards System . The children will be rewarded based on an economy point system. The students can also be given a caught doing good ticket (Weekly drawings take place for prizes).  The ultimate reward is KNOWLEDGE! 

Important Information Materials - Make sure students have all supplies each day. Their pencil pouch will have 5 sharpened pencils, 1 eraser, at least 3 highlighters, crayons and or color pencils, 1 glue stick and a pair of scissors . BE PREPARED

Other Key Points Medication If your child requires medication during the school day, please ensure that the doctor prescribing the medication fills out the proper form, and that it is submitted to the office. We cannot administer medication to your child. PLEASE DO NOT send any type of medication without proper authorization with your child, as he/she will not be allowed to take it.

Classroom Community Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. Our class rules are: Keep hands and feet to yourself. Follow directions when given. Remain seated until permission is given. Raise your hand if you wish to speak. Be kind to others and polite.
