Interactions of Light Write on RIGHT Side

Non- Transparent Brick Wall Transparent Glass Matter that transmits light. Objects can be seen clearly through it Ex: Air, water, some types of glass Non- Transparent Brick Wall

Translucent Frosted glass causes the image to look fuzzy Materials transmit light, but do not let the light travel straight through Objects look distorted or fuzzy Ex: frosted glass, lamp shades

Opaque Materials do not let any light pass through them Reflect light, absorb it, or both Ex: wood, brick, metal The shirt is opaque, because light does not pass through it, so we cannot see behind it

Absorption When light enters a material but does not leave it The transfer of light energy to matter The shirt absorbs the light that falls on it, therefore the shirt is opaque

Reflection When light bounces off the surface of an object When light strikes a smooth surface such as a mirror, it reflects in a uniform way When light bounces off the surface of an object

Reflection & Absorption The frog’s body is green because it reflects green and absorbs the other colors

Light Transmission For example, a green soda bottle is not green because it reflects green light, but instead transmits green light (lets it pass through) and absorbs other colors The color of a transparent or translucent object works differently than it does for opaque objects Some materials absorb some colors but let other color pass through

Light through a Medium When light passes through an object, it slows down Denser medium = slower light Different wavelengths slow down more than others Ex: In a medium, the speed of violet light is less than the speed of red light

Refraction The change in direction of a wave as it passes from one medium into another at an angle Causes a straight object to appear bent when it’s underwater

Light and the Earth’s Atmosphere Light waves travel at 300,000,000 m/s through space When light reaches the Earth, it slows down and refracts due to the gases in the atmosphere

Scattering When light is sent in many directions as it passes through a medium The color of the sky is due to scattered light, because the sky scatters light with short wavelengths (blue & violet)
