Light and Color light and color

Light and Matter Absorb: to soak up Reflect: to throw back
Transmit: to pass through

Light and Matter Transparent: materials that allow light to pass through them Examples: glass, water, air

Light and Matter Translucent: materials that allow some light to pass through them Examples: lamp shade, curtains

Light and Matter Opaque: materials that do not allow light to pass through them Example: bricks, metal, rubber, wood

Regular Reflection Regular Reflection: light reflecting off a smooth surface Examples: mirror, glass cloaking devices

Diffuse Reflection Diffuse Reflection: light reflecting off a rough surface at many different angles Examples: rocks, brick, the ground

Refraction of Light Refraction: when light bends as it passes into a new medium The index of refraction: the amount of bending that takes place during refraction Depends on the speed of light in each material

Rainbows Rainbow: droplets of water refracting light

Mirages Mirage: an image of a distant object produced by the refraction of light through layers of air

Light and Color Color: we see the color of light that is being reflected by an object White: all wavelengths of light are reflected Black: no wavelengths of light are reflected why is the sky blue? colorblindness test Sauce on Color color brain games Brain Games: in living color how we see color how we see in the dark

How we see Light enters your eye and is focused on the retina
Rods and cones in the back of the eye absorb light Light is converted into nerve impulses and transmitted to the brain

Your Eyes Seeing Color Cones: cells that allows us to see colors and shapes (daytime vision) Red cones: respond to red and yellow Green cones: respond to yellow and green Blue cones: respond to blue and violet Rods: cells that process light but not color or shapes (night vision)

Color Blindness If you are color blind, one or more of your sets of cones is not functioning properly 8% of men 0.5% of women

Primary Colors Primary colors of Light: Red, green and blue combine to make every other color of visible light Red + blue = magenta Blue + green = cyan Red + green = yellow White light: created by mixing all of the colors of light together
