1 Transparency and Color

2 Transparency Transparent – allows light to pass through in straight lines Translucent – allows some light to pass through, but not enough to clearly see an object Opaque – Light cannot pass through.

3 Atomic Level View of Transparency
OBJECT GLASS Transparent objects allow light to pass from atom to atom and emit the same wavelength that hits the object VIEW OF OBJECT

4 Atomic Level View of Opaque Items
OBJECT GLASS Opaque objects absorb the light energy that hits them

5 Speed of Light Is constant in a vacuum
300,000km/s Slows down when it passes through a medium

6 Color Color is our perception of a wavelength of light.
Humans can perceive three colors of light Red Green Blue All other colors are a mix of those three colors

7 Selective Reflection White objects reflect all wavelengths of light
Black objects absorb all wavelengths of light

8 Selective Reflection All other colored objects absorb some wavelengths and reflect others. Example A red object absorbs all wavelengths besides red.

9 Selective Transmission
G S When an object allows all wavelengths of light through, it appears clear.

10 Selective Transmission
Colored transparent objects transmit only the wavelength they appear Example Red glass allows only red light to pass through RE D G L A S
