Different kinds How many kinds of gymnastics are there? There are many kinds. Women's Men's Rhythmic Tumbling Acrobatic

Women’s Gymnastics Women compete in: Vault Bars Beam Floor

Men’s Gymnastics Floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar.

Vault Gymnasts sprint down a runway, jump onto a springboard, land momentarily, on the vaulting horse or vaulting table, then land on a two footed landing. In 2001, the traditional vaulting horse was replaced with a new apparatus, sometimes known as a tongue or table.

A typical performance will involve swinging skills in a support position (on the hands), a hanging position, and an upper arm position Parallel bars

Bars On the uneven bars (also known as asymmetric bars, UK), the gymnast uses two horizontal bars set at different heights. Gymnasts often mount the Uneven Bars using a springboard.

Balance beam The gymnast performs a choreographed routine from 60 to 80 seconds in length consisting of leaps, acrobatic skills, somersaults, turns and dance elements on a padded sprung beam. The event requires in particular, balance, flexibility and strength that gymnastics pursues.

Floor The floor is a carpeted 12m × 12m square, usually layered with hard foam over a layer of plywood, which is supported by springs or foam blocks generally called a "sprung" floor. Female gymnasts perform a choreographed routine 70 to 90 seconds long. The routines of a gymnasts consist of tumbling passes, series of jumps, dance elements, acrobatic skills, and turns. A gymnast usually performs three or four tumbling passes that include three or more skills or "tricks".

History The ancient Greeks believed that perfecting the human body was important in the development and education of young people. In ancient Greece all Greek cities had a gymnasium, a courtyard for running, jumping, and wrestling. Greek gymnastics gave way to military training. The Romans, for example, introduced the wooden horse. Slowly the practice of strength, endurance, and flexibility spread across the globe. German Friedrich Ludwig Jahn created Modern gymnastics. Gymnastics was introduced to the Olympics in 1896 for men and 1936 for women.
