Fredrick Ludwig Jahn invents the parallel bars, horizontal bar, pommel horse, and the vaulting horse. German immigration (1850) brings gymnastic clubs to the U.S. called Turner Societies. In 1865, American Turners establish a Normal College of the American Gymnastic Union for training gymnastic teachers.

Early historical records indicate that tumbling was connected with the dance. In Greece and Rome, early tumblers influenced entertainment and the theater. The word tumble is Teutonic in origin and means to dance violently with posturing, balancing, and contortions.
