Translational Research

Why should you care about translational research? The public cares. Translation into therapies justifies spending on science. Medical schools care. Discoveries from translation can drive clinical revenue, makes a hospital “cutting edge.” Clinicians care. This is why many physicians choose to work at academic medical centers. Increasing impatience to improve the health of the public. Care about the health of your community.

So where is the tension? Inadequate NIH financial support Progressive decline in the number of physician- scientists Pressure on clinicians to produce clinical income Increased competition to secure post-doc position Pressure on basic scientists to follow a traditional route to secure funding

Remember these guys? Brown and Goldstein, to be exact.

What can YOU do? Learn to define a health problem with as much precision as you do a basic science hypothesis Promote discussion and collaboration among basic scientists, clinical researchers, and clinicians to generate new ideas Develop or learn new methods, which can lead to new projects, fresh directions Take responsibility to define your career

Translational Research Competencies Identify major clinical or public health problems and relevant research questions. Literature critique: Identify, interpret, and critique the state of knowledge regarding a question. Design and write a protocol for clinical and translational research. Research implementation: Identify appropriate study design as to feasibility, efficiency, and bias-free inference. Sources of error: Evaluate reliability, validity and quality assurance.

Core Competencies, continued Use appropriate sample size, power. Apply basic statistical principles. Employ effective information management. Identify, evaluate, and minimize risks to research subjects. Effectively communicate orally and in writing with colleagues and the public. Work effectively with the diverse community. Work effectively within a multidisciplinary research team. Display effective leadership Manage a research project (personnel, budget)

Read a literature other than your own

Communicate daily with people who speak a different scientific language

Practice systems thinking

Get to know the patient, family, stakeholder

Talk to clinicians. How does research affect clinical care?

Find a mentor, or a role model outside your focus “I’m not a role model…Parents should be role models.”
