Dueling Devices: How to Assess and Justify Student Needs for Technology Perkins eLearning Webinar June 22, 2017 Yue-Ting (Ting) Siu, TVI/O&M, Ph.D ting@tplus.education @TVI_ting

So Many Options! @TVI_ting

How to Survive the Duel…. @TVI_ting

How to Survive the Duel…. @TVI_ting

Conceptual Framework: TPACK @TVI_ting

Start With a Needs Assessment What are the student’s sensory learning channels? (PK) Refer to the Learning Media Assessment (LMA) What instructional tasks does the student need to do? (CK) What features of technology does the student use? (TK) @TVI_ting

Sensory Learning Channels : Learning Media EVERY student is a dual media learner Consider: Work efficiency Uses and limitations of each sense Bridge primary sense with secondary and tertiary senses @TVI_ting

Common Instructional Tasks @TVI_ting

Technology Features for Visual Access Mouseless computing (keyboard commands/shortcuts) Font style and size adjustment Contrast adjustment Text highlighting and/or masking Screen magnification Text-to-speech (visual playback controls) @TVI_ting

Technology Features for Tactile Access Mouseless computing (keyboard commands/shortcuts) Computer-readable text Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Braille code translation compatibility @TVI_ting

Technology Features for Auditory Access Mouseless computing (keyboard commands/shortcuts) Computer-readable text Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Screenreader: Auditory access to menus, buttons, navigation of device and content Speech rate, pitch, voice @TVI_ting

TPACK in Practice Embed technology instruction within classroom integration Empower students and the team to feel successful – Get buy-in! Maintain flexibility – adjust tools as necessary Consider IEP goals as your annual lesson plan Use objectives as your task analysis How to write tech goals for the IEP: http://bit.ly/ieptechgoals-siu @TVI_ting

Case Study: “Pasta Guy” @TVI_ting

Sample IEP Goal for “Pasta Guy” When assigned a novel in Language Arts class, Sam will use a personal computing device with features for text-to-speech, screenreader, and screen magnification to read and annotate accessible digital talking books such as Bookshare books. He will do so independently for 100% of all assigned books, for 3 out of 4 trials. @TVI_ting

A Strategic IEP Goal: Implication Integration When assigned a novel Classroom teacher will assign novel to student, identifies media Personal computing device Device is available at all times Features of technology Drives cost comparison Read and annotate Identifies needed tech features and training Accessible digital talking books Team responsibility for format of educational materials @TVI_ting

Translate Task Analysis to Objectives Receive assignment Active Bookshare membership Download books to device Open reading app Adjust visual settings Read w/ TTS & screenreader Use annotation tools Download book and adjust settings for font size and utilize keyboard shortcuts for screen magnification Learn keyboard commands to playback audio reading using TTS and screenreader Make notes within book @TVI_ting

Takeaways: It’s all about… Aligning sensory learning channels Identifying tasks Identifying features of technology Collaboration: IEP team, Other end users Connecting with resources - Find your CoP! Perkins Paths to Technology Facebook Groups Twitter chats: #ATchat, #brlchat, #a11y @TVI_ting
