NCAA Eligibility and NAIA Eligibility Center Information Night Please pick up, one per family, the… “2016-17 Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete” & “NAIA Guide for the College Bound Student-Athlete” a copy of tonight’s PowerPoint and any other documents

NCAA Division Eligibility Eligibility for DIVISION I and DIVISION II Colleges and Universities No Eligibility requirements for Division III or smaller schools, or for Community Colleges.

Division I Requirements (pages 11-12) Graduate from high school Complete 16 course standard 4 years of English 3 years of mathematics (algebra I/Math 1 or higher) 2 years of natural/physical science 1 year additional of above course areas 2 years social science 4 years of additional core courses (any category above or foreign language) Have a qualifying core-course GPA and SAT/ACT Index (chart on right side of page 12) 2.3 GPA/900 SAT(75 ACT) – 3.55 GPA/400 SAT (37 ACT) (the writing component of the ACT or SAT is not used to calculate the ACT or SAT test score requirement)

Division 1 Requirements College-Bound Student-Athletes will be divided up into 3 categories: Qualifier: May receive athletics aid (scholarship), practice and compete their first year in a Division I college or university. Academic Redshirt: May receive athletics aid (scholarship) and may practice (first semester or quarter), but may NOT compete in the first year of enrollment. Nonqualifier: Cannot receive athletics aid (scholarship), cannot practice and cannot compete in first year of enrollment.

Qualifier must: Complete 16 core courses from the distribution below 4 yrs English, 3 yrs Math (Alg 1/Math 1),2 yrs Science (1 yr lab) 1 yr extra from first 3 areas, 2 yrs Social Science 4 yrs extra (English, Math, Science, Soc Sci, or Foreign Lang) Ten (10) of the 16 core courses must be completed before the start of the Senior year. Seven (7) of the 10 core courses must be in English, math or science. Have a minimum core-course GPA of 2.3 (GPA of the 16 core courses) from above Grades earned in the 10 required courses required before the 7th semester (senior year) including 7 in English, math or science, are “locked in” for purposes of GPA calculation A repeat of one of the “locked in” courses will not be used to improve the GPA if taken after the beginning of your senior year. Therefore if a course needs to be repeated (poor grade) and you wish to use it to bring up GPA of core courses- it must be done prior to the beginning of the senior year--- the sooner the better. Meet the GPA for Competition sliding scale requirement of GPA and ACT/SAT score (click here to see sliding scale B). Graduate from high school.

Academic Redshirt must: Complete 16 core courses from the distribution below 4 yrs English, 3 yrs Math (Alg 1),2 yrs Science (1 yr lab) 1 yr extra from first 3 areas, 2 yrs Social Science, 4 yrs extra (English, Math, Science, Soc Sci, or Foreign Lang) Have a minimum core-course GPA of 2.00 Meet the GPA sliding scale requirement of GPA and ACT/SAT score (click here to see sliding scale B) Graduate from high school Can retake core courses during senior year to improve GPA (unlike Qualifier)

Nonqualifier is a college-bound student-athlete who fails to meet the standards for a qualifier or for an academic redshirt.

Early Academic Qualifiers DI If you meet specific criteria after six semesters, you may be deemed an early academic qualifier for Division I Criteria: * Achieve a SAT score of 900 or higher or an ACT sum score of 75 or higher; and * Achieve a core-course grade point average of 3.00 or higher based on completion of 14 core courses after six semesters. The 14 core shall include 3 courses in English, 2 courses in Mathematics, 2 courses in natural or physical science, 2 additional years of English, math or science; and 5 additional courses in any NCAA core area

GPA is calculated using only the 16 core courses described on the previous slide. See page 16 for a description along with page 19 which has the Division I core course worksheet.

DIVISION II (starting Class of 2018) Qualifier Graduate from high school Complete 16 core courses w/ this distribution 3 years of English 2 years of mathematics (algebra I or higher) 2 years of natural/physical science 3 years additional from above course areas 2 years of social science 4 years of additional courses (any category above or foreign language) Meet the sliding scale of core-course grade point average (minimum of 2.2) and SAT/ ACT sum score

Division II D II Qualifier means: Practice and compete for your college or university during your first year of full-time enrollment; Receive an athletics scholarship during your first year of full- time enrollments; and Play four seasons in your sport if you maintain your academic eligibility from year to year.

DIVISION II (starting Class of 2018) Partial Qualifier Graduate from high school Complete 16 core courses w/ this distribution 3 years of English 2 years of mathematics (algebra I or higher) 2 years of natural/physical science 3 years additional from above course areas 2 years of social science 4 years of additional courses (any category above or foreign language) Meet the sliding scale of core-course grade point average (minimum of 2.0) and SAT/ ACT sum score

Division II D II Partial Qualifier means: Can practice with your team at its home facility during your first year of full-time enrollment; Can receive an athletics scholarship during your first year of full-time enrollments; Cannot compete during your first year of college; and Can play four seasons in your sport if you maintain your academic eligibility from year to year.

Division III While Division III schools do not offer athletics scholarships, 75% of Division III student-athletes receive some form of merit or need-based financial aid.

Send an e-mail to jeffhodges@cusd.com to notify him of the registration 5. Mr. Hodges will give the student 2 transcript release forms to fill out to send both Junior and Senior year transcripts to the Eligibility Center.

Other Information Send SAT/ACT scores to Eligibility Center when register for test (Not accepted on transcript)- See pg 21 SAT/ACT Prep- found on Counseling Center website at http://bhs.cusd.com/ Use code 9999 If take tests more than 1 time can use best subscores. For SAT- Math and Critical Reading For ACT- Math, Science, English and reading

NEW SAT and NCAA The new SAT started in March of 2016. NCAA will NOT be mixing and matching the best scores (in Math and Reading) from the OLD test (prior to March 2016) and the NEW test (March 2016 and beyond)

Freshman Eligibility Requirements Meet two of the three following requirements- 1. Achieve a minimum of 18 on the ACT or 860 Old SAT(prior to 3/16)/ 940 on the New SAT 2. Achieve a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 3. Graduate in the top half of your high school class.

Early Decisions for high school Seniors Students who have completed their junior year of high school and have at least a 3.0 GPA and the minimum test scores required (18 ACT or 860 Old SAT/940 New SAT) may obtain an eligibility determination before graduating from high school. Need to register and request that their official transcripts be sent after their junior year. If not previously sent, contact ACT or SAT to have test scores to be sent.

Steps to take Register at playnaia.org When you register for the ACT or SAT include the NAIA Eligibility Center using the code 9876. Meet with Mr. Hodges to sign a transcript release form for junior( if wishing early decision) and senior year

Additional Information Cost to register is $75 NAIA Connections Service- Allows you to create a customized Sport Resume and they will send your Sport Resume to the schools you want to connect with.
