5 Importance of proper class placement and rigor
No repeat for ANY course if you earn a grade of C- or higher. There is a significant increase in the rigor of curriculum from 8th grade to high school. College prep courses are more difficult. (challenge yourself in areas of strengths)

March 7 & 8- Freshmen Parent Orientation March Register ASI students in ASI’s Library Lecture Hall March 18- Make up registration for ASI students at ASI Library Lecture Hall

7 English Course Circle the number next to English 9
Honors English 9 Criteria Students will be invited to Honors English 9 based upon first semester 8th grade AB Language Arts grade, 7th grade SBAC ELA score, and a writing placement assessment. Students who qualify will receive a congratulatory and welcome notification letter of the placement in Honors English 9. Parents may contact the counselor to drop Honors English 9.

8 P.E. Course Circle the number next to the P.E. class you will be taking.

9 Geography/Health Course
Circle the number next to Geography/Health. This is a required course for all Freshmen. Note: If you sign up for Geography/Health for summer school cross off Geography/Health and add the class requested at the bottom (Elective 2nd choice).

10 Math Course Please leave blank.
Students will be placed into the Mathematics course based upon high school criteria

11 Science Course Circle the number next to Biology . If you are part of the Energy & Environmental Engineering Academy you will be placed in the EA Biology course. Students will be invited into Honors Biology based on multiple measures including but not limited to: first semester grades and 8th grade teacher recommendation. Some students may not be enrolled into a Science class as a 9th grade student based on the above criteria.

12 Elective Course (1st Choice)
All students will get one Elective course (unless Geography/Health is taken during summer school) Look at the list of Freshman Elective Courses listed below. Choose the course you would most like to take. Record the name of the course and the number under Elective (1st Choice) NOTE: World Language courses require a “B” grade or better in English and “met” (3) or “exceeded” (4) standard on the 7th grade ELA SBAC

13 Elective Course (2nd Choice)
Look at the list of Freshman Elective Courses listed below. Choose the course you would like to take if your 1st choice is not available. Record the name of the course and the number under 2nd Choice Elective.

15 Summer School Course Freshmen are allowed to take Health/Geography during summer school. NOTE: Students must have earned grades of “C” or better in all semester 1 courses.

20 Link Crew (under the leadership of Allison Swearengen)
Who are they? They are a group of upperclassmen whose job is to help in the transition of students from the 8th to 9th grade What do they do? They give an orientation at the beginning of the year and create contacts for the freshmen so they can reach out for help and regularly be checked up on.

21 During the 1st block period of the school year, the Link Crew members will meet with all the freshmen in their English class. During this 1st meeting, the Link Crew members will play icebreaker games which will introduce freshmen to strategies for success in high school.

22 Freshmen Registration for the Fall Thursday, August 11
During this time students will: Return all registration paperwork given out during Registration Pick Up. Pick up their I.D. Card Pick up their class schedule Have a chance to make corrections if incorrectly placed.

23 Students can also: Purchase PE Clothes Purchase a copy of the BHS Yearbook Sign up for the PSAT Test

24 Advice to Parents… Be involved with your child’s work and friends.
Make sure students keep up with homework. High school is so much more than academics, keep balanced. Freshman grades count. Don’t let your child tell you otherwise. Encourage your child to challenge themself academically (Honors and AP). Don’t be afraid to use tutors. Know what the resources are on campus- Counseling Center, lunch/ after-school tutorials, Peer Counselors, teachers, Career Center, etc.

25 More Advice to Parents…
Encourage good study habits. Help your child set goals, and help in the decision making process for courses. Discuss post-secondary possibilities (what is your child going to do after BHS?) College visits are encouraged. Communicate, communicate, communicate.

26 NCAA Division Eligibility
Eligibility for DIVISION I and DIVISION II Colleges and Universities No Eligibility requirements for Division III or smaller schools, or for Community Colleges.

27 Division 1 Requirements
College-Bound Student-Athletes will be divided up into 3 categories: Full Qualifier: May receive athletics aid (scholarship), practice and compete their first year in a Division I college or university. Academic Redshirt: May receive athletics aid (scholarship) and may practice (first semester or quarter), but may NOT compete in the first year of enrollment. Nonqualifier: Cannot receive athletics aid (scholarship), cannot practice and cannot compete in first year of enrollment.

28 Full Qualifier must: Complete 16 core courses from the distribution below 4 yrs English, 3 yrs Math (Alg 1),2 yrs Science (1 yr lab) 1 yr extra from first 3 areas, 2 yrs Social Science 4 yrs extra (English, Math, Science, Soc Sci, or Foreign Lang) Ten (10) of the 16 core courses must be completed before the start of the Senior year. Seven (7) of the 10 core courses must be in English, math or science. Have a minimum core-course GPA of 2.3 (GPA of the 16 core courses) from above Grades earned in the 10 required courses required before the senior year are “locked in” for purposes of GPA calculation A repeat of one of the “locked in” courses will not be used to improve the GPA if taken after the beginning of your senior year (Therefore if a course needs to be repeated (poor grade) and you wish to use it to bring up GPA of core courses- it must be done prior to the beginning of the senior year--- the sooner the better. Meet the GPA for Competition sliding scale requirement of GPA and ACT/SAT score (click here to see sliding scale B). Graduate from high school.

Meet two of the three following requirements- 1. Achieve a minimum of 18 on the ACT or 860 on the SAT 2. Achieve a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 3. Graduate in the top half of your high school class.
