Presentation transcript:

Is it bullying?

WHAT IS BULLYING HARM Harmful Action or words Repeated More than once to hurt or control others

Types of bullying Physical bullying Verbal bullying Non-verbal bullying Cyber-bullying

What is playful teasing? Make sure your words do not hurt another person’s feelings If the person looks hurt, be sure to let them know you were teasing and meant no harm. If the teasing among friends hurts your feelings, ask your friends to stop. Let people know how you feel.

Accidental behavior What are accidental behaviors? Sometimes accidental behaviors may seem like bullying but they are not. Bumping into someone, forgetting to return borrowed items, spilling something on someone, and saying something that was not intended to hurt another's feelings

Misunderstanding What is a misunderstanding? Sometimes friends have needs that are different from our own and it can feel like bullying. Think about a time when you have asked a friend to play and your friend said no thanks, I just want to be alone. You get upset because you really wanted to play with your friend.

Peer conflict Is it normal for friends to fight about different needs and wants? Yes! Peer conflicts can be solved. We will learn how to solve conflicts this year!

Is it bullying? A group of students won’t let Madison sit with them at lunch every day. Bullying

Is it Bullying Jeremy is happily drawing a picture by himself. When Jacob asks him to play, he says, “I can’t. I’m busy.” Not bullying Jeremy is stating his needs. He would like to spend his time drawing.

Is it bullying? Nate trips and spills paint on Kate’s shirt. Not bullying It was an accident

Is it bullying? Every time Emily sees Sherry she makes a mean face at her. Bullying

Is it bullying? Shawn wants to play tag and Rob insists on playing basketball. Not bullying Shawn and Rob will have to use their conflict resolution skills to solve their problem.

Is it bullying? Marcus isn’t feeling well and when his classmates try to sit with him, he tells them to leave him alone. Not bullying Marcus is stating his needs to be alone

Is it bullying? At recess, Joey always takes the sand toys away from Rob, so he can’t play in the sand box. Bullying

Is it bullying ? When Allie puts her coat on, her hand hits Brian in the face. Not bullying

Is it bullying? When Brandon and Chad play on the same soccer team, Chad always runs right in front of Brandon on purpose and makes the play. Bullying

Is it bullying? Monica limps from a sports injury. Kathy likes to follow her around the play ground and laugh at her. Bullying

What we do at EES Kindergarten and first grade we focus on how to be a good friend and feelings identification. In second grade we start to focus on being a helpful bystander. We also begin discussing empathy. We practice using simple language to stand up for themselves and others. Cool Cat!
