Scottish Learning Festival Raising Aspirations through the World of Work at Barmulloch Primary School

Context Barmulloch Primary School in the North East of Glasgow 100% SIMD 1 and 2 Additional Learning Needs Provision for North East

Why Careers? “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Steve Jobs “Paul and I, we never thought that we would make much money out of the thing. We just loved writing software.” Bill Gates

Aims Young people to think about their future careers from the start of Primary 1 until the end of Primary 7 Raising aspirations through the world of work Exploring and embedding the skills required for learning, life and work Strengthening links between schools and businesses to maximise opportunities for future collaboration

Aims WOW committee Careers Conference World of Work Wednesday Coding Club Social Enterprise Entrepreneurship

Developing the Young Workforce As a core part of the curriculum from 3-18, children and young people will learn about the world of work, job possibilities and the strengths and skills needed for work. They will find out about: their personal attributes, preferences and sense of self the concept of work (including entrepreneurship, social enterprise and self-employment) skills and experiences which relate to a range of jobs and careers diversity and equity where to find help and careers information routes into further training, learning, apprenticeships and work.

Our starting point Learner conversations identified a lack of aspirations for children Children only aware of a limited number of jobs Some children saying ‘I’ll probably be excluded like my older brother’

Our Journey World of Work Committee (WOW) Committee established in school Children targeted for this group – SIMD/LAAC/lowest and highest 20%

Careers Conference Careers Conference organised in sessions 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 Networking breakfast for WOW committee Range of jobs – awareness of ensuring gender equality Parents invited in for a workshop on careers WOW committee has developed a Careers Motto for the school

The Power of WOW ‘To know about the jobs we can get’ ‘I want to be an entrepreneur and before WOW I didn’t know this job existed and would never have been able to become one.’ ‘The WOW helps the younger children to understand. If we teach them from Primary 1 then they’ll have a better understanding before going to secondary.’ ‘ It helps us to know what different jobs means and the skills you need.’ ‘You have to be ambitious about your future and never give up. Always keep going. If I try one day and it doesn’t work out then I should keep going and it will all work out.’ ‘All the teachers are helping to teach us about jobs. It helps us quite a lot and has helped me change my mind about what I want to be in the future.’ ‘The WOW has inspired us to think more about jobs that make you go WOW’

World of Work Wednesday Launch of World of Work Wednesday in session 2016-2017 Children have been applying for jobs in the school. Some children will be invited for interview and will then begin work experience every Wednesday at 2.30 WOW committee provide feedback to applicants They will have a line-manager and will have a termly performance review There will be opportunities for promotion!

World of Work Wednesday Work of Work committee have set a target that by June 2018 all children in the school will have a job and take part in work experience During World of Work Wednesday all classes participate in career related learning

Coding Club Children in our ALN provision have been learning how to code and make animations Every week during World of Work Wednesday the ALN provision invite children in from the mainstream in and teach them how to code Lots of impact!

Social Enterprise Social enterprise is running a business with a social aim All classes ran a Social Enterprise in Term 3 during session 2016-2017. This will continue this session P5/4 attended a ‘Dragons Den’ event to pitch for money to help start up their business They won an award in the Scottish Assembly Halls in Edinburgh. This helped raise aspirations

Entrepreneurship Children in the upper school took part in an all day event called ‘Entrepreneur Me’ Children ran a business and had to make as much profit as they could

Impact

Impact ‘I think careers work was really good as it makes you ready for exams and will help in Secondary and in the future. Careers week has been the best week in school ‘ Mathuyan ‘It helps us learn from other people and it inspires me to think about a career that can save lives’ Nathan ‘I liked learning about being a teacher and it inspired me about my career as a doctor. I now know I want to be a children’s doctor. It makes me more relaxed knowing what I want to do.’ Amanda ‘It makes me more confident about the different jobs for the future. I now want to be an entrepreneur.’ David ‘It was really good because it made me think about what I want to be . I want to be a councillor’ Abi ‘It gave me a big range of jobs for when I’m older. I want to be a pilot.’ Abdi ‘It made me realize that I can change my mind about jobs and I have options for the future.’ Rayan

Staff feedback ‘Coding club was a great success. Instead of just using scratch I will build in time to work on lego projects’ ‘A focus on skills from early in the year would put children in a good position for this week. Something I will include for the start of the session’ ‘Try to do more career based activities throughout the year’

Next Steps All children in school to have a school job by June 2018 Develop performance reviews for work experience and advertise promotions Continue to develop Social Enterprise in school Ember World of Work Wednesday in school and involve parents with this WOW committee to organise a Careers Conference in session 2017-2018 Training for WOW committee on recruitment Continue to embed the Careers Related Standard
