COLOR

What is Color? Color is the element of art that is produced when light, striking an object, is reflected back to the eye

There are 3 properties to COLOR 1. HUE – hue is the name we give to a color like RED, BLUE, YELLOW. 2. INTENSITY- intensity is the strength and vividness of the color. For example we may describe the color BLUE as “royal” (bright, rich, vibrant) or “dull” grayed. 3. VALUE- value is the lightness or darkness in a color. The terms SHADE and TINT are value changes in color.

PRIMARY colors are those that cannot be made from mixing other colors. RED YELLOW BLUE SECONDARY colors are colors made by mixing two primary colors together . red and yellow to get orange, yellow and blue to get green, or red and blue to get purple. GREEN ORANGE PURPLE

COMPLEMNTARY - colors are Two colors on opposite sides of the color wheel

An INTERMIDATE color is formed when a primary color is mixed with an adjacent secondary color - for instance, blue (a primary) is mixed with violet -purple (a secondary) to produce blue-violet or blue is mixed with green for blue-green.

Analogous Colors Closely related hues, especially those in which we can see a common hue; hues that are neighbors on the color wheel, such as blue, blue-green, and green.

The colors; reds, and yellows, are often associated with fire and sun, which suggest warmth. On the other side, cool colors; blues and greens, are often associated with water, sky, and spring, which suggest coolness.

MONOCHROMATIC - monochromatic is when you use one color to create a piece of art using different SHADES and TINTS

Vincent Van Gogh He was a Dutch Post impressionist painter who was known for the rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold color in his work.

Starry Night

Andy Warhol Andy Warhol was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s.
