8/26 Anecdote: a short story about an interesting or funny event or occurrence. Synonyms: story, tale, narrative, or incident This essay is a personal narrative called “Taking Risks.”

What is the big deal? Why is the essay such an important part of the application? How can it help you? How can it hurt you?

Option 1 Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

Option 2  The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

Option 3 Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

Sample Dialogue Rule 1: Use double quotation marks to indicate that a person is speaking in your writing. Example A: When I was young, my mother told me, “Follow your passion and the money will come.” Example B: “No,” she said, “I don’t have any plans tomorrow.”

The essay will move from past (background and context) to present (incident) to future (reflection and projection)

Present/past will depend on essay itself. 7. Use natural but descriptive language. Paint a picture of yourself with words. Show not tell Avoid Clichés
