2. General Tips Treat the college essay as a narrative.
The purpose: Gain insight into you in ways that they cannot glean from the rest of your application.
Must be about you!
Don’t wax poetic about Mom as your inspiration.
Topics to avoid: mission essay, drugs and/or illegal behavior,
Be careful about sob stories.
Avoid cliché.
The grand paradox of the college essay.
Treat the college essay as a narrative.

3. General Tips Focus on one story.
A story about a car crash reminds you of a story about fishing, which leads to the time you got into a fight with your brother.
Any story is interesting and relevant if your reflection is honest and compelling.
Limit to-be verbs.
Is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been
Use strong, active verbs.
I ran  I bolted.
I was given a chance, so I took it. A chance slapped me in the face, and I said, “Much obliged.”

4. 1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.  The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?  Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?  Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.  Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.  6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? 
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. 

5. The most popular essay prompt of the application year (through January 5, 2018) was "Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth..." (23.6%), followed by the topic of your choice option (22.5%), and "Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful..." (21.4%). 

6. Basic Structure Start with the story. Then discuss you and the story.
How the story has impacted you, your character, your world view, you perspective, your identity
Then discuss the story and your future
—especially your future in college.

7. Supplemental Essays Much shorter.
Stories still work to make them compelling.
Don’t try to sell the university; they know their school is awesome.
Go to the school’s websites to find names of specific programs, facilities, professors, etc….
