10 million people lived in the area that would become the United States. MANY DIFFERENT CULTURE AREAS!

It’s Story Time!

Lakota Sioux Hundreds of years ago, the Lakota Sioux lived in the woods of Minnesota. Black Hills of South Dakota. They called the mountains “the heart of everything that is.” This region is also called “The Great Plains”.

What did they eat? Some grew beans, squash and corn. Hunted for deer and fished in the rivers and lakes. Moved around on horses to hunt for Buffalo.

Sioux Homes The Lakota lived in tepees—tents that they often covered with buffalo hides.

Powhatan The central East Coast is the traditional Powhatan location. The Powhatan lived between what are now Virginia and New Jersey. This area is also known as the Woodlands.

What did they eat? Farmers and hunters. corn, beans and squash. They also ate meat and fish.

Powhatan Homes Rectangle-shaped with rounded roofs. They covered the frames with layers of grass and bark. The Powhatan people lived in villages.

Matoaka, also known as Pocahontas. The daughter of Chief Powhatan.

Pueblo Oldest civilization. Pueblo means “village” in Spanish. Present day Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. This area is known as the “Southwest”.

What did they eat? farming They ate beans, sunflowers, squash, pumpkins, tobacco, cotton, and corn of many colors. Corn was their main crop. They also hunted small game like deer, antelope and rabbits. They also gathered fruits and nuts.

Pueblo Homes Using clay, they made structures of stone and mud (adobe) People built apartment-like dwellings
