Responsibilities of Parenting Chapter 2

Chapter Objectives Explain who can benefit from knowing about child development and parenting. Describe the five areas of responsibilities for parents. Identify pressures involved in sexual development. Summarize the benefits of abstinence. Describe the possible consequences of sexual activity. Compare and contrast the options available to a teen parent. Explain what it means to be sexually responsible.

Main Idea Parenting is a learning process with many demands and rewards There are many decisions that must be made before and during parenthood.

Preparation for Parenting Being a parent is one of the most important roles a person has in life. Parenting – process of caring for children and helping them grow and develop. Having reasonable expectations for children is the first step in effective parenting. Parents need to know when to help and when to let their children fail. Parents must decide when to encourage children to try different activities. The skills needed by parents will change as the children get older.

Preparation for Parenting Why do you think that parenting is a learning process? Can you imagine a job where you work 24 hours a day 7 days a week?

Parenthood Readiness Emotional Maturity Health Considerations A person needs emotional maturity to handle the changes and demands of parenthood. - being responsible enough to consistently put someone else’s needs before your own needs. Health Considerations Certain medical conditions can affect the health of the child and the parent’s ability to care for a child. Financial Concerns Raising a child is expense. It requires the financial resources to pay for clothes, health care, food, equipment and other expenses.

New Responsibilities Lifestyle Changes Emotional Adjustments Changes to the daily life of adults. Caring for children takes a huge amount of time and energy Emotional Adjustments Fear of being a good parent Frustration at the loss of person Worry of money matters Jealousy of the baby and the attention he or she gets from the other parent, friends, and relatives Depression due to exhaustion and the physical changes of pregnancy and birth

New Responsibilities Relationship Changes Employment Adjustments Parents likely notice changes in how they interact with each other and other family members and friends. Employment Adjustments Some parents cut back on hours, changes jobs, or stop working to care for their children. Legal responsibilities Parents have a legal responsibility to provide food, shelter, clothing, medical care, an education, and legal help for their children

Main Idea Choosing abstinence from sexual activity allows you to take responsibility for your well-being.

Sexual Development Sexuality – your beliefs and values about sexual behavior Hormone – a chemical in the body that controls the changes that occur as teens become sexually mature

Sexual Pressures Messages are everywhere, Name some . . . . . . . Should you listen to these messages? Sexual activity is not the same as intimacy. Expressing affection by other acts such as sharing feelings and dreams, holding hands. Lasting and loving relationship is not based on sexual activity. Cannot save a bad relationship

Family Values One role of family is to pass on family and society values. Values are based on ideas about what is right, good, and desirable. Self-respect, respect for others, commitment, and loyalty

Abstinence Abstinence – deliberate decision to avoid high-risk behavior. Talk about your feelings before you get in an intimate situation. Say no to any situation that does not feel right. Show affection in nonsexual ways.

Consequences of Sexual Activity Sexually Transmitted Infections – a disease that is spread from one person to another by sexual contact. Pregnancy Health risks Education challenges Financial issues Paternity – legal identification of a man as a biological father of a child Emotional and social stress

Teen Parenting Options Marriage Single parenthood Adoption Confidential adoption – an adoption in which the birth parents do not know the names of the adoptive parents. Open adoption – an adoption in which the birth parents and adoptive parents know something about each other.

Take Responsibility Knowing your values and living by them. Fidelity – faithfulness to an obligations, duty, or trust.
