IMO Ballast Water Regulations Revision of G8 Guidelines for the type approval of BWMS Adopted 2016 Guidelines for Approval of Ballast Water Management Systems (G8), Resolution MEPC.279(70) 2016 G8 should be applied as soon as possible but not later than October 28, 2018 Recommends BWMS installed* on ships On or after October 28, 2020 should be type approved under MEPC.279(70); and Prior to October 28, 2020 should be type approved under either resolution MEPC.174(58) or MEPC.279(70) * “installed” means the contractual date of delivery of the BWMS to the ship or, in the absence of such a date, the actual date of delivery of the BWMS to the ship

USCG Extensions of Compliance Date Extension letters will remain valid until the extended compliance date specified in the extension letter Coast Guard will continue to accept requests for extensions Application for supplemental extensions must be submitted not later than 12 months prior to expiry of the extended compliance date; consider all available USCG type approved BWMS at that time No longer accept batch applications; each application must be vessel-specific Extension request must be accompanied with an explicit statement that compliance is not possible despite all efforts and supported by documentary evidence; extension granted will be for the minimum time required Extension requests for vessels with compliance dates on or after January 1, 2019 are held in abeyance. With available USCG type approved BWMS, additional information must be submitted to justify the need for extension
