SBIRT-Screening and Brief Intervention Combined Session Evidence Based Approaches to Adolescent Substance Use and Misuse

SBIRT: NIAAA Tier 1 strategy Primary prevention tool to reduce drug/alcohol-related incidents. Can be applied simply and successfully to youth and young adults aged 14-21 years old Can detect risk early Is empirically based Is a fast and versatile approach

SBIRT: Four step approach Screen: CRAFFT, AUDIT, NIAAA 2 Age-Specific Questions Assess Risk as Low, Moderate or High 1-5 short individual sessions with brief advice using motivational interviewing approach. Continue support for Moderate and High Risk youth. Review goals, explore recurrent use or consequences. Consider referral to full assessment.

SBIRT: Reports from the field Texans Standing Tall: A NIAAA Tier 1 strategy has been applied simply and successfully on campus with a primary focus on alcohol. Erie County Council for the Prevention of Alcohol and Substance Abuse: Focus on Consequences for Adolescents (FOCA) program, which is a personalized indicated brief prevention program for adolescents and young adults. NYC Prevention Services, NYS OASAS: “Teen Intervene” is a tested, time-efficient, evidence-based program (EBP) for teenagers experiencing mild to moderate problems associated with alcohol or other drug use.

SBIRT: Opportunities and indications for the field Opportunities beyond CSB Prevention Specialists include partnership with primary health care providers, ER, Urgent Care, School Clinical and Nursing staff, Juvenile Justice. Screen youth who smoke cigarettes because they are more likely to drink. Youth with conditions associated with SA; depression, anxiety, ADHD, conduct disorder.

SBIRT: Opportunities and indications for the field Cont. Health problems that might be SA related; STI, Unintended pregnancy, eating or sleeping problems, chronic pain. Youth who show significant behavioral changes; increased oppositional behavior, mood change, GPA drop, unexcused absences, change of friends, loss of interest in activities.
