History of video games The history of video games goes as far back as the 1940s. Video gaming would not reach mainstream popularity until the 1970s and 1980s, when arcade video games, game consoles and home computer games were introduced to the general public. Since then, video gaming has become a popular form of entertainment and a part of modern culture in most parts of the world. There are currently considered to be eight generations of video game consoles, with the sixth, seventh and the eighth concurrently ongoing.

The evolution of video games With video games becoming a major part of our lives as children and adults both get engrossed in them, one may wonder about the history or the evolution of video games. They might wonder what sort of games came up during the times of inception of video games and should they know it, it is no wonder that comparing the pioneer video games with today's high-tech and high end games will make us realize the development and progress that has been made in this great industry.

Invention of some video games: In 1952, A.S. Douglas wrote his PhD degree at the University of Cambridge on Human-Computer interraction. Douglas created the first graphical computer game - a version of Tic-Tac-Toe. The game was programmed on a EDSAC vaccuum-tube computer, which had a cathode ray tube display.

William Higinbotham created the first video game ever in 1958 William Higinbotham created the first video game ever in 1958. His game, called "Tennis for Two," was created and played on a Brookhaven National Laboratory oscilloscope. In 1962, Steve Russell invented Space War. Space War was the first game intended for computer use. Russell used a MIT PDP-1 mainframe computer to design his game.

Classification of games generation: There are classified some games generation which are coming forward from the beginning of the era. The generations are giving below : Second Generation(1977-1983) Third Generation(1985-1989) Fourth Generation(1989-1996) Fifth Generation(1993-2002) Sixth Generation (1998-2006) Seventh Generation (2004-to date)

Second Generation (1977-1983) This generation of advancement saw the item called the cartridge being introduced in to the gaming world for the very first time. These cartridges contained ROM chips which was used to burn programs into and these cartridges can then be used to insert into the console and engage in play. A major advantage of this technology was that, the consumers were able to collect and play numerous games at will.

Third Generation (1985 - 1989) This generation of development saw the console based video gaming fall and computer based gaming taking over. This happened partly due to the famous crash of the console video games and also due to the fact that computer gaming allowed gamers increased sense of freedom and total control.

However, the reign of the computer wasn't long to be However, the reign of the computer wasn't long to be. Video game consoles took over once again thanks to Nintendo's NES and the game with which it came to the market: Super Mario Bros.

Fourth Generation (1989-1996) Following the crash of 1982–1984, the home video game industry experienced a rebirth with the introduction of a new generation of game units driven by two technological innovations: lower- cost memory chips and higher-power 8-bit microprocessors. These developments enabled game designers to produce home video game consoles that could successfully compete at a quality level equal to that of arcade machines.

Fifth Generation (1993-2002) The fifth generation of home video game systems featured 16-bit processors, more detailed graphics, and more imaginative games. This generation was dominated by Nintendo and Sega.

Sixth Generation (1998-2006) One of the most important generations of the modern gaming age, this is the 128 bit era, which gave birth to famous consoles such as, Sony PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube and Microsoft Xbox.

Seventh Generation (2004-to date) The generation of our time, this era started from 2004, with releases of consoles such as Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3, and the Microsoft Xbox 360.
