Who is Responsible? Looking at the question, “Who is responsible for what happened?” is an important, but very difficult job. There were huge numbers of both individuals and groups of people as a whole that acted wrongfully during the Holocaust.

Then they came for me–– and by that time no one was left to speak up.

In 1943, Polish underground courier Jan Karski informed President Franklin D. Roosevelt of reports of mass murder received from Jewish leaders in the Warsaw Ghetto. U.S. authorities did not, however, initiate any action aimed at rescuing European Jews until 1944. By the time the United States was ready to rescue them, however, 4 out of every 5 Jews who would die in the Holocaust were already dead. The United States is responsible for the Holocaust.

Most of the people living in Nazi controlled Europe did nothing to harm or help the Jewish people. They acted as bystanders. They are responsible for the Holocaust.
