Who is Responsible? Looking at the question, “Who is responsible for what happened?” is an important, but very difficult job. There were huge numbers of both individuals and groups of people as a whole that acted wrongfully during the Holocaust.

And I Said Nothing In Germany They first came for the communists and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the trade-unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me–– and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Responses 1. How does the poem "And I Said Nothing" show the actions of some people in Germany during the Holocaust? Many people were bystanders- they just stood by and watched this happen. 2. How do you think Pastor Niemoller felt at the end of the poem? Alone, scared.  3. Why do you think Pastor Niemoller did nothing? He was not the one being targeted, he was scared.  4. What is the danger in saying or doing "nothing"? If everyone does nothing, very bad things can end up happening.

Activity Read each slide that comes up on the Smart Board. Think. Then decide which corner to move into:   Agree Strongly Agree Disagree Strongly Disagree

Adolf Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany Adolf Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany. He created all of the laws against the Jewish population, and ultimately put into place the “final solution.” Adolf Hitler is responsible for the Holocaust.

High ranking Nazi officials such as Rudolf Hoess, Hermann Goering, Joseph Goebbels, and Heinrich Himmler helped organize, plan, and carry out the “final solution.” They are responsible for the Holocaust.

Nazi soldiers, members of the regular German police forces and army, and other middle level soldiers physically moved, separated, tortured, and murdered those victims of the Holocaust. They are responsible for the Holocaust.

In 1941 high ranking Nazi officials and leaders of the lands the Nazis had captured were present at a meeting in which the “Final Solution” was openly revealed. These non-Nazi leaders are responsible for the Holocaust.

In 1943, Polish underground courier Jan Karski informed President Franklin D. Roosevelt of reports of mass murder received from Jewish leaders in the Warsaw Ghetto. U.S. authorities did not, however, initiate any action aimed at rescuing European Jews until 1944. By the time the United States was ready to rescue them, however, 4 out of every 5 Jews who would die in the Holocaust were already dead. The United States is responsible for the Holocaust.

Most of the people living in Nazi controlled Europe did nothing to harm or help the Jewish people. They acted as bystanders. They are responsible for the Holocaust.

Countries should be responsible for the safety of other countries and ethnic groups who are in danger at any cost.

Countries should be responsible for the safety of other countries and ethnic groups who are in danger if it seems appropriate to them.

Countries should be responsible for the safety of other countries and ethnic groups who are in danger if it doesn’t involve risking their own citizen’s lives.

Countries should NOT be responsible for the safety of other countries and ethnic groups who are in danger.

Non-Jews and other groups of people during this time in Germany would sometimes act as a bystander to all that was going on around them. In other words, they would do nothing to help nor harm those targeted people. They are responsible for the Holocaust.

Final Reflection What have you learned about who could be considered responsible?
