Step 2: Read through the following slides about the 3 categories of new technology.

Electrification (a big word that means to USE ELECTRICITY) How did electricity change people’s lives? 1. Labor saving products were produced Examples of labor saving products are: washing machines, electric stoves, vacuum cleaners With labor saving products, people had more time to do fun things – like go to the movies or take a Sunday ride in their new automobile 2. Electric lighting became common in homes, businesses, and cities 3. The entertainment industry grew – examples: radios, movies 4. Electricity improved communication between people – example: telephones

Communication Radio People listened to their favorite news stations, concerts, sporting events, music, and comedies on the radio. You know how you wait for your favorite TV show to come on once a week (like The Walking Dead or Big Bang Theory for me!)? Well in the 1920s, people looked forward to their favorite radio show to come one once a week!

Communication 2. Movies The first movies were black and white, and SILENT!!! A piano player would play at the front of the theater – he or she would play music that went with each movie scene – action music, sad music, suspense music, etc. The Jazz Singer was the first “talkie”, which is what they called movies with sound. Mickey Mouse was introduced

Steamboat Willie

Charlie Chaplin Rudolph Valentino June Marlowe Mary Pickford

Transportation 1. Cars Allowed people to travel faster Created jobs Caused transportation related industries (oil, steel, road construction) to grow Encouraged people to move to the suburbs

Transportation 2. Airplane The Wright Brothers flew the first successful airplane, but people did not think airplanes would ever become popular. Planes were a new technology used during World War I.
