Action Research Data Moving with Math

Teacher Interview Question: “How many students are working in the Moving with Math program in your class?”   Answer: “I have seven students in my class who are working with the Moving with Math workbooks.” Question: “ How many different levels are being used in your class?”  Answer: “I currently am using four different levels of books.”    Question: “How do you like the program?”  Answer: “I like that there are several different levels of books, so I can select a book that is at the student's academic level and move them forward from there.  I like that there are examples for students to look at when new concepts are presented. I do not like that in some situations in  the books, a new concept is presented and there is minimal practice on it.  In these situations, I need to have supplemental materials to reinforce new concepts.”  Question: “Have you seen an increase in ability with your students?”   Answer: “I have seen an increase in ability with my students.  It has been very beneficial to have peer mentors with the lower level students.  In these situations, the peer mentors can provide the additional instruction that is often needed.  Also, it has been very important to use manipulative, calculators, and whiteboards when working through the assignments.”    Question: “Give a couple of examples of supplements you use with the program.”  Answer: “I use math sites on the computer, math games, and worksheets that I have collected over the years.”    Question: “Do you like the direct instruction model for increasing math skills?” Answer: “I especially like the direct instruction model for the lower level students and for the students with autism.”   Question: “What changes if any would you want to see in the program?”  Answer: “I would love to have a situation someday where we could also use the online component of the program.”

Student Interview Researcher: “How many times have you had this IS Math class?” Student: “It is my second year. I took it as a sophomore and now am taking my junior year.” Researcher: “How many books have you completed in that time?” Student: “Three last year and 1 this year.” Researcher: “Do you like the math work in the Moving with Math workbook?” Student: “I like using the things that go along with the books including the building blocks. They help me see what I am doing.” Researcher: “Do you like working alone or do you like having help?” Student: “I like when someone helps me do my work, they help me understand it better and if I make a mistake they can let me know and help me fix it.” Researcher: “Do you think you are learning important math doing this program?” Student: “I am learning how to do some things that will help me when I graduate from high school. I think that I can use money better now that I am better in math.”
