ENGINEERING UPDATE March 2017

WHAT WILL BE COVERED? Progression routes Design Principles NEW TECHNICALS OFFER WHAT WILL BE COVERED? Progression routes Design Principles Qualifications Content Assessment Grading UCAS

The Level 2 Technical Award must provide depth of study. OVERVIEW OF CONTENT Unit 201 –Engineering communication Understand engineering drawing conventions Understand  the operation of Computer Aided Design (CAD) Understand the use of basic components in engineering Understand basic units of measurement used in engineering. Unit 202 – Engineering development Understand the methods used to manufacture commercial products. Understand the methods used to make prototype products. Understand the types and properties of materials that are used to make engineered products. Understand the importance of design criteria in evaluation The Level 2 Technical Award must provide depth of study. It is approved for use and will provide learners with an awareness of the engineering sector rather that giving them a pathway into a particular job outcome. First teaching planned for September 2016. Scheme number 1145-20.

This is externally set and externally marked. ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW External exam This is externally set and externally marked. The pass mark is not published. Sample exam in documents tab on the webpage. Samples from all qualification content. Synoptic assignment This is externally set, internally marked and externally moderated. Once again a sample is available on the webpage. Covers all qualification content

OVERVIEW OF CONTENT – LEVEL 2 TECHNICAL CERTIFICATES (1145-21) Four Pathways Manufacturing Technologies Maintenance Fabrication and Welding Electronics Generic Units Unit 203 – Principles of Engineering Unit 204 – Developing engineering Workshop Practice Unit 205 – Working in engineering businesses The Level 2 Technical Certificates will replace the Level 2 2850 suite of qualifications for Full-Time learners (KS5). Where possible aligned to new Apprenticeship standards First teaching planned for September 2017. There are four pathways. Each has the same three generic units nominally 60 GLH. Each pathway will be 360 GLH.

OVERVIEW OF CONTENT – FABRICATION AND WELDING PATHWAY Unit 206 Welding processes Unit 207 Fabrication practice These are the units for the Fabrication and Welding pathway. Unit 208 Cutting processes

OVERVIEW OF CONTENT – MAINTENENCE PATHWAY Unit 209 Engineered systems Unit 210 Planned maintenance These are the units for the Maintenance pathway. Unit 211 Principles of maintenance

OVERVIEW OF CONTENT – MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES PATHWAY These are the units for the Manufacturing Technologies pathway. Unit 212 Manufacturing principles Unit 213 Manufacturing products

OVERVIEW OF CONTENT – ELECTRONIC PATHWAY Unit 214 Electronic components Unit 215 Electronic assembly These are the units for the Electronic pathway Unit 216 Electronic test equipment Unit 217 Automation

External exam Synoptic assignment ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW External exam This is externally set and externally marked. The pass mark is not published. Samples from all qualification content. Synoptic assignment This is externally set, internally marked and externally moderated. Covers all qualification content

OVERVIEW OF CONTENT – KS5 LEVEL 3 TECHNICALS Sizes of qualification (GLH) and UCAS points 360 GLH = 140 points (56). 540 GLH = 210 points (84). 720 GLH = 280 points (112). 120 points converts to 48 on new tariff. Mandatory units 301 - Engineering materials 302 - Electronics, control and instrumentation 303 - Mechanical structures and dynamics 304 - Manufacturing methods in engineering The qualification has UCAS points, has potential to be delivered as one or two year programmes. 720 size now included in MME pathway of the Level 3 Engineering Manufacture SASE/W framework. SASE/SASW – Pathway 3 Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering

OVERVIEW OF CONTENT – KS5 LEVEL 3 Mandatory units 305 - Engineering design 306 - Engineering mathematics and statistics 307 - Engineering workshop practice (540/720) 308 - Innovation and new technologies (540/720) 310 - Manufacturing engineering (720) 311 - Robotics and automated manufacture (720) The remainder of the mandatory units. The first six we listed can form the 360 GLH sized qualification as they are all 60 GLH. The 540 and 720 GLH sized qualifications have additional mandatory units.

OVERVIEW OF CONTENT – KS5 LEVEL 3 TECHNICALS Optional units 309 - Project management 312 - Civil engineering 313 - Aerospace engineering 314 - Power and energy in engineering Optional units 315 - Automotive engineering 316 - Rail engineering 317 - Marine engineering Then we have the optional units. One can be chosen when completing the 540 GLH sized qualification and two when choosing the 720 GLH sized qualification. There are six sectors to choose from plus a project management unit.

This is externally set and externally marked. ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW External exam This is externally set and externally marked. The pass mark is not published. 030 covers 301 – 306 032 covers 307 and 308 Synoptic assignment This is externally set, internally marked and externally moderated.
