Algebra Vocabulary

An expression that includes at least one variable. Algebraic Expression

An expression that represents repeated multiplication of the same factor. Power

A fraction that compares two quantities measured in different units. Rate

A mathematical sentence formed by placing the symbol = between two expressions. Equation

A number substituted into a variable that makes the original statement true. Solution

An equation that relates two or more quantities. Formula

All positive and negative whole numbers, including zero. Integer

The distance between a number and zero on the number line. Absolute Value

Any number that can be written as a÷b in which b cannot equal zero. Rational Number

The set of all rational and irrational numbers. Real Number

Any real number written in front of a variable. Coefficient

Terms that have identical variable parts with corresponding variables raised to the same power. Like Terms

The positive value of a square root. Principal Square Root

Conditional Statement Any sentence written in the form, if – then and has a hypothesis and conclusion. Conditional Statement

An example to show than an if – then statement is false. Counterexample

A comparison of two quantities using division. Ratio

The number or expression inside a radical symbol. Radicand

A number that cannot be written as the quotient of two integers. Irrational Number

An equation that states two ratios are equal. Proportion

An equation that is true for all values of the variable. Identity

A mathematical sentence formed by placing one of the symbols <, ≤, > or ≥ between two expressions. Inequality

Two inequalities joined by and or or. Compound Inequality

A compound inequality using the word and Conjunction

A compound inequality using the word or Disjunction

The sum of the values of a data set divided by the number of values. Mean

Absolute Value Equation An equation that contains an absolute value expression. Absolute Value Equation

The absolute value of the difference between an actual measurement and a given number; variance. Absolute Deviation

Absolute Value Inequality An inequality that contains an absolute value expression. Absolute Value Inequality

On a number line, the set of points that represent all solutions of the inequality. Graph of an Inequality

A pairing of elements of one set. Relation

The pair of elements in a relation that represent the input (x) Domain

The pair of elements in a relation that represent the output (y) Range

A relation in which each domain element there is exactly one range element (one-to-one correspondence) Function

The input variable (x); also considered the domain. Independent Variable

The output variable (y); also considered the range. Dependent Variable

Standard Form A linear equation in the form Ax + by = C; where A, B, C are real numbers and A & B are not zero. Standard Form

The x-coordinate of a point where the graph crosses the x-axis. X-intercept

The y-coordinate of a point where the graph crosses the y-axis. y-intercept

The ratio of the vertical change (the rise) and horizontal change (the run) between two points on a line. Slope

Compares the change in one quantity to a change in another quantity. Rate of Change

The form of an equation listed below: y = mx + b Slope-Intercept Form

Two lines, on the same plane, that never intersect and have the same slope. Parallel lines

The relationship of two variables x and y if there is a nonzero number k such that y = kx. Direct Variation

The nonzero number k in the equation y = kx, the equation of Direct Variation. Constant of Variation

The form of the equation: Point-slope form

A statement where the hypothesis and conclusion are reversed from a conditional statement. Converse

Two lines on the same plane who intersect to form a 90 degree angle. Perpendicular Lines

System of Linear Equations Two or more linear equations in the same variable. System of Linear Equations

Consistent Independent System A linear system with exactly one solution. Consistent Independent System

Consistent Dependent System A linear system with infinitely many solutions. Consistent Dependent System

A linear system with no solution. Inconsistent System

The power of ten nearest the quantity. Order of Magnitude

An expression that contains a radical, such as a square root, cube root or other root. Radical Expression

Rationalizing the Denominator The process of eliminating the radical from the expression’s denominator by multiplying the expression by an appropriate form of one. Rationalizing the Denominator

A number, a variable with a positive integer exponent or the product of a number and one or more variables with a positive integer exponent. Monomial

Amonomial or a sum of monomials. Polynomial

The coefficient of the first term when a polynomial is written so that the exponents of a variable decrease from left to right. Leading Coefficient

A value of the variable in a polynomial for which the corresponding polynomial is zero. Root

A model for the height of an object that is propelled into the air but has no power to keep itself in the air. Vertical Motion Model
