RCR Training Goal is for anyone involved in research to perform the most ethical research possible Topics generally incorporated include: Conflict of interest -Human participant protections Mentoring -Collaborative research Peer review -Data management Research misconduct -Authorship Plagiarism -Animal subjects welfare

RCR Training NU strongly encouraged for all students, staff, and faculty involved in research Federal regulations require RCR National Institute of Health (NIH) National Science Foundation (NSF) NU schools, departments and programs have RCR policies which detail who needs to complete RCR Some schools/departments require RCR training for all PhD students and postdoctoral fellows regardless of funding

Federal RCR Requirements National Institute of Health (NIH) Requires that all individuals (undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, fellows, participants, scholars) who receive funding or support from specific types of NIH awards participate in RCR training Awards included: NIH training awards, individual career development awards (K), institutional career development awards, research education grants, research service awards (NRSA) and/or dissertation research grants http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-10-019.html

Federal RCR Requirements National Science Foundation (NSF) Requires that all undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers supported by any NSF award complete RCR training http://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/rcr.jsp  NU strongly encourages all students, staff, and faculty involved in research to attend RCR training in order to ensure that research is being conducted as ethically as possible.

RCR Training Implementation Each individual proposal/award requiring RCR must have a plan for RCR completion Compliance is tracked with each award ORI, schools and departments assist with NSF RCR tracking PI is ultimately responsible for ensuring RCR training Noncompliance could result in unallowable salary charges which would require repayment to the award NIH has more prescriptive guidelines regarding what constitutes compliant training

NU Plan for NSF RCR Training Undergraduate students supported by NSF awards must complete online RCR training through the CITI program no more than sixty days after salaries are first charged to the account. http://www.research.northwestern.edu/ori/training/rcr/undergrads.html Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers supported by NSF must complete RCR training, which may include online as well as in-person training, within one year of salaries first being charged. Check with your department or program to determine what is required

Learn@Northwestern Training management system that will enhance communication about NU training requirements and opportunities Initially designed to manage and track research safety training and NSF RCR training Example: If you have not already completed RCR training and begin to be paid on a NSF award, you will receive an email notification to complete RCR.

University Research Centers: Center Implementation Center Policy Consistent with ORI: All undergraduates required to complete RCR training within 60 days of salary first charged All graduate students and post docs required to complete both CITI RCR training and instructor-led RCR course in the appropriate discipline within ONE YEAR of salary charged Noncompliance with either will result in salary moved from sponsored to non-sponsored chart string

University Research Centers: Center Process Change Emails to trainees will be auto-generated once salary is charged to NSF List of instructor-led training courses can be found in the RCR ILT Curriculum in Learn@Northwestern Graduate students must register through CAESAR Post docs will register through Learn@Northwestern New tracking reports generated monthly and re-distributed to centers for monitoring Responsibility in centers for managing compliance

University Research Centers: Instructor-Led Training Graduate Students- home department Post docs- discipline appropriate to research Information about instructor-led courses, including when they are offered, can be found in Learn@Northwestern. Examples: Chemistry/Physics: 1 course each in fall McCormick: Graduate Students: Offered each quarter (2x’s spring) Post docs- separate course in Fall, Winter, Summer
