The God-Man Jesus Luke 3:21-37 INTRODUCTION: By-Mark Perkins, the pastor of Denver Bible Church ========== The Real ‘Night before Christmas’. Daniel 7:13-14; Luke 2.   ‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the realm, ev’ry creature was stirring, with God at the helm. The messengers sent to the shepherds with care, near Bethlehem Judea, town chosen most fair. At the stable there gathered just a few who’d see, the birth of Lord Jesus, the King of the free. The centuries of prophets came down to a day, the Day of the ages, of God’s Holy say. But the night before Christmas was a solemn affair, ‘round the throne of the Father, who was sending Him there. For long in the past before the dawn of mankind, the Son was the sacrifice of God’s own design. Sacrifice most terrible but lovely indeed, sacrifice most precious, destined to bleed. And there at throne of the Ancient of Days, was presented the Son, with the angels’ hoorays! The Son of Man then before union was made, received power and glory, for a kingdom yet laid. Its purpose was mighty - to rule all the earth, in peace and justice and Almighty mirth. But one thing was needed ‘fore kingdom could be, a people who’d worship on free-bended knee. On the night before Christmas there waited a crown, for the one who was going to that little town. But thorns were its make-up, and sin was its cost, and before kingdom there waited the Cross. 2. Who is this one that so many celebrate? 3. Christmas is a no brainer for who to celebrate? Christ Mas

John 1:1–5 (ESV) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ~~~~~~~~John 1:1–5 (ESV) — 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

1 Timothy 2:3–6 (ESV) 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. — 1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. ~~~~~~~~3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

Hebrews 2:14–18 (ESV) 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. ~~~~~~~~14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

Hebrews 4:14–16 (ESV) 14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. ~~~~~~~~~14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Read the Genealogies in Matt 1--Story from the Genealogies of Matthew If Jesus came from such a line, and used these people, can’t he also love and use us? ~~~~Matthew 1:1-17 Matthew Genealogies 1 The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:   2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, (Friend of God-Believed God and it was counted to him for righteousness) Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. 3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, (Tamar, the daughter in law of Judah—Child was Perez) Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram. 4 Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon. 5 Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, (Rahab—the harlot) Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and (Ruth-the Moabitess--Deuteronomy 23:3-4. 3 “No Ammonite or Moabite shall enter the assembly of the Lord; none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, shall ever enter the assembly of the Lord, 4 because they did not meet you with food and water on the way when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. NASB 95) Obed the father of Jesse. 6 Jesse was the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon by Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah. (David, the adulterer, murderer, friend of God) 7 Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa. 8 Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, (King of Isreal for 41 years. Most of his life was godly. At the end of his life, he depended on his own strength and God rebuked him. 2 Chronicles 16:9 “For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His. You have acted foolishly in this. Indeed, from now on you will surely have wars.”NASB 95) Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah. 9 Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. 10 Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, (Loved and served God. When told he would die, begged for 15 more years.) Manasseh the father of Amon, and (55 years in Judah, More wicked then other nations, aggressive idolatry, killed babies, was dragged away in hooks and shackels, repented and humbled himself before God, was restored to his throne 2Chron 33:1-21) Amon the father of Josiah. 11 Josiah became the father of Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. 12 After the deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel. 13 Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor. 14 Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud. 15 Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob. 16 Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah. 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations. NASB 95 ~~~~~~~~~Jesus came from such a line, and used these people, can’t he also love and use us?
